Contextual Overview

27It was then that Jesus's cowboys rode back up with the vittles. They saw that he was talking to a Samaritan lady, but none of them had the nerve to ask why. 28The lady left all of her stuff there and ran back to the village. She excitedly told the story of what had just occurred to everyone she met along the way. 29"Quick, come see the cowboy who could read my mind and see into my soul! Go and see for yourself. I think he is God's Top Hand . . . I believe he is the Messiah!" 30They all looked his way and started heading toward the well. 31Meanwhile, the cowboys were telling Jesus, "Hey Boss, you need to eat something." 32But Jesus replied, "I already have food that you cannot fathom." 33The cowboys began asking each other if maybe someone had already brought him a biscuit or something. 34Jesus sighed and said, "My strength comes not from the food that goes in your mouth, but by doing what my Father tells me to do. My nourishment is finishing what he has sent me to do. 35There's a saying, 'In a few months after the calves are born, there will be a branding.' But I'm telling y'all to open your eyes right here. These calves are ready to brand now. 36The branding crew will be paid good wages, and the calves they brand will be those who will spend eternity on God's outfit. There will be a fine reward for those who did the calving and the branding when the time comes.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But he said unto them,.... That is, "Jesus", as the Persic, or the Lord Jesus, as the Ethiopic versions express it:

I have meat to eat that ye know not of: meaning the conversion of the Samaritan woman, and of other Samaritans, who were flocking in great numbers to him, which he knew, though his disciples did not; and the harvest of souls he had a prospect of, see John 4:35, was as meat unto him, delightful and refreshing; and his mind and thoughts were so taken up with these things, that he had no inclination to any corporeal food.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

I have meat to eat - See John 4:34.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 32. I have meat to eat that ye know not of. — Our blessed Lord seizes every opportunity to raise the minds of his apostles to heavenly things, through the medium of earthly matters. Nor does he force these things into such service. Properly understood, earthly substances are the types, representatives, and shadows of heavenly things.
