Contextual Overview

⁴³After he'd finished his two-day clinic, Jesus continued toward Galilee. ⁴⁴He had already said that God's cowboys would be respected everywhere except his hometown, ⁴⁵but the folks in Galilee were accommodating. They had been in Jerusalem during the Passover and seen everything he did there. ⁴⁶He rode through Cana where he'd first turned water into wine. ⁴⁷A government worker heard Jesus was there and rushed in to talk to him. His son was sick in nearby Capernaum, and the man begged Jesus to come and heal him before he died. ⁴⁸Jesus said, "Y'all only believe when you see wondrous things." ⁴⁹The government worker hit his knees and pleaded, "Boss, you're the only one who can help my son. Please come before it's too late." ⁵⁰Jesus put a reassuring hand on the man's shoulder and said, "Go home. Your son will be fine." The man believed him and headed out at once. ⁵¹While he was heading back, he ran into one of his servants who had been caring for the boy. The servant told him that his son was alive and well. ⁵²He asked him when he had recovered and he said that it had been the day before at about one in the afternoon.

For Jesus himself testified,.... Matthew 13:57;

that a prophet hath no honour in his own country: all the Oriental versions read, "in his own city"; that is, Nazareth: for these words must not be understood as a reason why Christ left Judea, and went into Galilee, because he had no honour in Judea, in which was Bethlehem, the place of his nativity; but are a reason why, when he came into Galilee, he did not go to Nazareth, his own city, where he was educated, and had been brought up, and had lived the greatest part of his life, because they treated him with great disrespect and contempt; Matthew 13:57- :.

For Jesus himself testified ... - See the notes at Matthew 13:57. The connection of this verse with the preceding may be thus explained: “Jesus went to Galilee, but not to Nazareth, for he testified,” etc. Or, “Jesus went to Galilee, ‘although’ he had said that a prophet had no honor in his own country; yet, because he foreknew that the Galileans would many of them believe on him, he went at this time.”
