THE MESSAGE
Jesus said, "I did one miraculous thing a few months ago, and you're still standing around getting all upset, wondering what I'm up to. Moses prescribed circumcision—originally it came not from Moses but from his ancestors—and so you circumcise a man, dealing with one part of his body, even if it's the Sabbath. You do this in order to preserve one item in the Law of Moses. So why are you upset with me because I made a man's whole body well on the Sabbath? Don't be nitpickers; use your head—and heart!—to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right."

14About halfway through the festival, Jesus stood up in the main church and began to preach.
15The people listening marveled at his knowledge and wondered where he came by such wisdom without having attended seminary.
16Jesus knew their questions and said, "My teaching does not come from me. It comes from God who sent me.
17Anyone who rides for God will be able to tell if my teaching is from him or it is merely my own.
18Those who speak on their own are after personal glory, but the cowboy who seeks glory only for God is a man of truth. There will be nothing false about him.
19Moses gave y'all the Law. There are a lot of teachers and preachers of the Law, but not one of you obeys it. Not only that, but you are trying to kill me."
20This riled everyone up, and people started yelling, "A demon has you hog-tied! Who is trying to kill you?"
21Jesus said, "I showed y'all one miracle, and you were astonished.
22But I'm not the only one who did work on the day of rest. Y'all do too when you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. (Actually, circumcision came from our ancestors and not Moses.)
23You say that you circumcise on the Sabbath so that the child will follow the teachings of Moses, but then you get mad at me for healing a man's whole body on the same day. You cut off a piece of man on the Sabbath and call it holy, but I make them whole, and you call me possessed.

Jesus answered and said unto them,.... Taking no notice of their passion, reproach, and blasphemy; but proceeding upon the thing he had in view, and which he was determined to reassume, and vindicate himself in;
I have done one work; that is, on the sabbath day; meaning, his cure of the man that had had a disorder eight and thirty years, who lay at Bethesda's pool; which single action, they charged with being a breach of the sabbath, he mentions with a view to their many, and daily violations of it:
and ye all marvel; at it, as a thing unheard of, as a most shocking piece of iniquity, as an intolerable evil; wondering that any man should have the front, to bid another take up his bed and walk, on the sabbath day: they did not marvel at the miracle that was wrought; but were amazed, offended, and disturbed, at its being done on the sabbath day.

Ye all marvel - You all wonder or are amazed, and particularly that it was done on the Sabbath. This was the particular ground of astonishment, that he should dare to do what they esteemed a violation of the Sabbath.

Some have δια ÏÎ¿Ï Ïο, in connection with Î¸Î±Ï Î¼Î±Î¶ÎµÏε, which the common pointing makes the beginning of the next verse, and which, in our common version, is translated therefore; but this word conveys no meaning at all, in the connection in which it is thus placed. Proof of this construction Kypke gives from Themistius, Strabo, and AElian. All the eminent critics are on the side of this arrangement of the words.
