¹⁴About halfway through the festival, Jesus stood up in the main church and began to preach. ¹⁵The people listening marveled at his knowledge and wondered where he came by such wisdom without having attended seminary. ¹⁶Jesus knew their questions and said, "My teaching does not come from me. It comes from God who sent me. ¹⁷Anyone who rides for God will be able to tell if my teaching is from him or it is merely my own. ¹⁸Those who speak on their own are after personal glory, but the cowboy who seeks glory only for God is a man of truth. There will be nothing false about him. ¹⁹Moses gave y'all the Law. There are a lot of teachers and preachers of the Law, but not one of you obeys it. Not only that, but you are trying to kill me." ²⁰This riled everyone up, and people started yelling, "A demon has you hog-tied! Who is trying to kill you?" ²¹Jesus said, "I showed y'all one miracle, and you were astonished. ²²But I'm not the only one who did work on the day of rest. Y'all do too when you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. (Actually, circumcision came from our ancestors and not Moses.) ²³You say that you circumcise on the Sabbath so that the child will follow the teachings of Moses, but then you get mad at me for healing a man's whole body on the same day. You cut off a piece of man on the Sabbath and call it holy, but I make them whole, and you call me possessed.

But I know him,.... His nature and perfections, his purposes and promises, his council and covenant, his mind and will; and indeed none knows him but he, and those to whom he pleases to reveal him; and there is good reason why he should have intimate and perfect knowledge of him:

for I am from him; being the only begotten of him, and as such lay in his bosom, and knew him, and his whole heart, and was privy to all of him, and that that is within him;

and he hath sent me; in an office capacity to redeem his people. This is the original descent of Christ, which the Jews knew not, though they pretended to know him, and whence he was.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 29. But I know him: for I am from him — Instead of ειμ, I am, some editions, the Syriac Hieros. read ειμι, I came, according to the Attics. Nonnus confirms this reading by paraphrasing the word by εληλυθα, I came. As the difference between the two words lies only in the accents, and as these are not found in ancient MSS., it is uncertain which way the word was understood by them: nor is the matter of much moment; both words amount nearly to the same meaning and ειμι, I came, seems too refined.
