THE MESSAGE
As the crowd swelled, he took a fresh tack: "The mood of this age is all wrong. Everybody's looking for proof, but you're looking for the wrong kind. All you're looking for is something to titillate your curiosity, satisfy your lust for miracles. But the only proof you're going to get is the Jonah-proof given to the Ninevites, which looks like no proof at all. What Jonah was to Nineveh, the Son of Man is to this age.

Contextual Overview

29More and more folks crowded around Jesus as he talked, "All those ridin' for themselves keep asking me to do more and more miracles. But the only miracle they will see will be the same one the Boss did for Jonah. 30He was dead three days and then came back. This miracle was to prove to the evil people in Nineveh that Jonah came from the Boss. God will do the same thing for his Top Hand. 31The Queen of Sheba traveled all the way from her foreign land to listen to the wisdom of Solomon. On Judgment Day, she will condemn y'all because now there is one even wiser than he was. 32Even the people of Nineveh will talk bad about y'all on Judgment Day. They listened and did what Jonah told them to, but there is someone greater than even Jonah here, but y'all won't turn from your sorry ways. 33"No one lights an oil lamp at night and then puts a hat over it. They will put it on a high shelf so that it can shine for everyone to see. 34"Your eye is the oil lamp for your body. When your eyes are open to the truth, your whole body shines with light. 35But if you are only looking for the ways of the world to please you, then your eye is squeezed shut, and no light is within you. 36If your body is full of light, your whole life will shine bright and be blessed."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And when the people were gathered thick together,.... Upon this woman's lifting up her voice, and saying the things she did; or rather to see what sign he would give, which some had desired Luke 11:16

he began to say, this is an evil generation. The Alexandrian copy, two copies of Beza's, and the Vulgate Latin, and Arabic versions read, "this generation is an evil generation"; and also it was an "adulterous one", as is added in Matthew 12:39

they seek a sign; for they had asked one of him, Luke 11:16

and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet; one like unto it: Luke 11:16- :
