Contextual Overview

¹While all this was happening, many thousands of people had shown up to see and hear Jesus. There were so many people around that some were getting crushed. Jesus spoke to his twelve cowboys amidst the throng of folks saying, "Watch out for the religious leader's hypocrisy ²³Things whispered behind the hay will be shouted in the streets. Things mumbled under your breath will be blasted from the rooftops. ⁴"My friends, don't be afraid of those who can kill your body. When you die, it is over in a second. ⁵But listen, be afraid of the One who has power over your soul. We should fear the Boss because he is the only one who has the authority and power to throw you in the trash fire which is forever. He's the One you should be bowing down to. ⁶"But before you start thinking the Boss is against you, consider this, what do a few birds cost—two cents at the most? But God doesn't even forget about these little birds. ⁷The Boss has numbered the hairs on your head, so you don't have to be afraid. You are worth more than all the birds in the world. ⁸I'm telling you the truth. If you ride for me in public down here, I will show the angels in heaven that you have eternal life in God's outfit because you are in my tally book. ⁹But if you shun me down here, I'm going to shun you in heaven. ¹⁰I will forgive everyone and everything except the person who denies me and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Yes, he did have his pickle clipped to show a sign of his faith and that God had accepted him because of the trust. We might say Abraham is the ramrod of all who are accepted by God through faith, regardless of pickles.

For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed,.... No sin, be it ever so secret or privately done, as nothing is more covered than hypocrisy, but what shall be detected sooner or later; if not in this world, which is often the case, yet the last judgment, and in the world to come:

neither hid, that shall not be known; for how careful soever men may be to hide their vices from others, they are known to God; who will bring every thing into judgment, and make manifest the secrets of all hearts. These were general sentences, which were used by Christ at different times, upon different occasions, and applied to particular cases; :-.

Luke 12:3

Shall be proclaimed upon the housetops - See the notes at Matthew 10:27. The custom of making proclamation from the tops or roofs of houses still prevails in the East. Dr. Thomson (“The Land and the Book,” vol. i. p. 51, 52) says: “At the present day, local governors in country districts cause their commands thus to be published. Their proclamations are generally made in the evening, after the people have returned from their labors in the field. The public crier ascends the highest roof at hand, and lifts up his voice in a long-drawn call upon all faithful subjects to give ear and obey. He then proceeds to announce, in a set form, the will of their master, and demand obedience thereto.”
