Contextual Overview

41Pete asked, "Are you talking about everyone being ready or just us?" 42Jesus said, "A top hand is a cowboy who has shown himself to be faithful in the little things as well as the big. The boss is always looking for top hands to lead and teach other cowboys. 43A top hand will get an excellent reward for the integrity he shows while the boss is away. 44If he does well, the boss will put him in charge of the whole ranch. 45A cowboy who thinks he is top hand material, but mistreats other people and then thinks about nothing except eating, drinking, and getting drunk, 46this cowboy will be punished severely when the boss returns. He'll be thrown off the ranch and told never to return. 47"And the cowboy who knows what he should be doing, but isn't prepared or ready to do the job will also be punished. 48Now if someone doesn't know what they are supposed to do, but makes a mistake anyway, they will just be talked to. Top notch work will be required from top hands. And when more is given, more will be expected." 49Jesus said, "I have come to start the prescribed burn over the dead patches of this world. 50My upcoming baptism will not be in cool water, but I will suffer a terrible agony until I have paid the price for all.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For from henceforth there shall be five in one house,.... Which are the five following, mentioned in the next verse; the father and the son, the mother and the daughter, and her daughter-in-law, or son's wife; for the mother and mother-in-law are one and the same person, only standing in different relations; as a mother to her own daughter, and a mother-in-law to her son's wife, or to her husband's daughter by his first wife; though the former best answers to the word used: now from the time of Christ's saying these words, or quickly after this, immediately upon his baptism of sufferings, or soon after his death, when the Gospel should be preached more publicly and extensively, this should be the effect of it; that supposing a family consisting of the above number, they should be

divided from one another, in the following manner:

three against two, and two against three; three that did not believe in Christ, against two that did believe in him; or two that did not believe, against three that did; or three that did, against two that did not; or two that did, against three that did not. The Ethiopic version reads, "two shall be separated from three, and one shall be separated from two".
