¹¹Everyone was listening to everything Jesus was saying. He told them a story because everyone was thinking that God's outfit was coming very soon. ¹²He said, "A hard cow boss was summoned to the ranch owner's house far away to be made the ranch manager. ¹³Before he left, he called together ten cowboys and gave them each a young colt to work with while he was gone. ¹⁴But many people who worked on the big ranch hated the cow boss and didn't want him to be the ranch manager. ¹⁵"After he was made the ranch manager, he returned to his ranch and called in all the cowboys he'd given colts to. He wanted to see what they'd done with the horses. ¹⁶The first cowboy said, 'Hey boss. I started your colt, and now you can rope off him, cut cattle, and even throw a little kid up on him if you're of a mind to.' ¹⁷"'Great job, cowboy!' the new ranch manager said. 'You've done well. You were given a little and returned it to me better. I'm going to make you the new cow boss.' ¹⁸"The next cowboy said, 'Here you go boss. I've started your colt, and you can drag calves off of him. He's moving real good off your feet, too.' ¹⁹"'You too did a great job, cowboy!' the ranch manager said. 'I'm going to make you the wagon boss of this outfit.' ²⁰"But the third cowboy walked up with his horse and handed it back to the ranch manager. The cowboy said, 'I kept him safe for you. Then came the first,.... Who were set in the first place in the church, the apostles of Christ, and who had the greatest gifts, and laboured more abundantly, and were eminently useful; such an one was the Apostle Paul:

saying, Lord; acknowledging the sovereignty and dominion of Christ over them, owning they were accountable to him, and that he had a right to inquire, what use they had made of their gifts, and what advantages these had produced;

thy pound hath gained ten pounds; it had been increased tenfold; or it has turned to a tenfold account, in the conversion of sinners, in the edification of the saints, and in the advancement of the kingdom, and interest of Christ. This servant owns, that the gifts he had were Christ's; he calls them, "thy pound"; and therefore did not glory in them as his own attainments, or, as if he had received them not; and ascribes the great increase, not to himself, but to the pound itself; to the gifts of Christ, as they were his, and as used by his grace and strength, and as blessed, and owned by him, to these purposes.

Ten cities - We are not to suppose that this will be “literally” fulfilled in heaven. Christ teaches here that our reward in heaven will be “in proportion” to our faithfulness in improving our talents on earth.

Verse Luke 19:16. Lord, thy pound hath gained ten — The principal difference between this parable and that of the talents above referred to is, that the mina given to each seems to point out the gift of the Gospel, which is the same to all who hear it; but the talents distributed in different proportions, according to each man's ability, seem to intimate that God has given different capacities and advantages to men, by which this one gift of the Gospel may be differently improved.
