Contextual Overview

³⁶One of the religious know-it-alls invited Jesus to have supper at his house and he accepted. ³⁷There was a lady from town who wasn't really known for being a "lady." She heard Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house and so she showed up with an expensive bottle of perfume. ³⁸She knelt down by his feet and sobbed at the plight of her life. Her tears fell on Jesus's boots and she wiped his boots clean with her hair. She even kissed them as she poured the perfume on them. ³⁹The religious know-it-all who'd invited Jesus said under his breath, "If this guy was God's Top Hand, there is no way he'd let that kind of woman touch him with her hair, much less her lips." ⁴⁰Jesus heard him and said, "Listen to me, Simon.""I'm listenin'," he answered. ⁴¹"There was a top hand who was hired by two different ranchers. One ranch owed the cowboy five hundred dollars and the other ranch owed the cowboy fifty dollars. ⁴²Cattle prices were way down and neither rancher could afford to pay the cowboy, so he told them both not to worry about it and take care of their families. Tell me, which one would have the most respect for the cowboy?" ⁴³Simon said, "I reckon' it would be the rancher who owed him the five hundred dollars."Jesus said, "You know he would." ⁴⁴Then Jesus turned to the woman, but spoke to Simon. "You see this girl? I came here as your guest, but you didn't offer me a rag to wipe the trail dust from my boots, but she cleaned them with her tears and her hair. ⁴⁵You didn't even welcome me with a brotherly hug, yet she has kissed my boots from the time I got here.

And he saith unto her,.... Directing his discourse to the woman that now stood before him:

thy sins are forgiven; which was said, partly on account of the Pharisee, to let him see, that he knew this woman, what she was, and had been; that she had been a sinner, a great sinner, one that owed five hundred pence, but was now forgiven, washed, cleansed, sanctified, and justified, and therefore not to be shunned and avoided; and partly on the woman's account, that she might have a fresh discovery of the forgiveness of her sins, for her comfort under the severe censure of the Pharisee, and that her faith in it might be strengthened; as also on his own account, to show that he was not only a prophet that had extraordinary knowledge of persons, and their characters, but that he was the most high God, to whom belonged the prerogative of pardoning sin.

Thy sins are forgiven - What a gracious assurance to the weeping, loving penitent! How that voice, spoken to the troubled sinner, stills his anguish, allays his troubled feelings, and produces peace to the soul! And how manifest is it that he that could say thus “must” be God! No man has a “right” to forgive sin. No man “can” speak peace to the soul, and give assurance that its transgressions are pardoned: Here, then, Jesus gave indubitable proof that he was God as well as man; that he was Lord of the conscience as well as the pitying friend; and that he was as able to read the heart and give peace there, as he was to witness the external expression of sorrow for sin.

Verse Luke 7:48. Thy sins are forgiven. — He gave her the fullest assurance of what he had said before to Simon, (Luke 7:47), Thy sins are forgiven. While the Pharisee murmured, the poor penitent rejoiced.
