Contextual Overview

45Just as soon as they were done, Jesus told his cowboys to get into a nearby boat and go across the sea to Bethsaida. Jesus said goodbye to his boys as the crowd filed away and 46then he went up on a nearby mountain to pray and talk to his Dad. 47Later that evening, a storm caught the cowboys while in their boat. 48Jesus could see his boys straining against the oars as they fought the tumbling sea. When the night was nearly over, he decided to go to Bethsaida and beat them there by walking across the sea as if it were a dry patch of ground. As he was passing them by, 49they saw him and got scared out of their skin. 50They thought he was some sort of ghost and were terrified. But at the height of their fear, he spoke to them and said, "Don't be scared, boys! It's just me." 51Then he walked over and climbed into the boat with 'em. When he did, the storm completely stopped. The cowboys couldn't believe what they had just seen. 52Unfortunately, their hearts were hard because they had already forgot about the loaves and the fish earlier in the day. 53They anchored the boat when they finally got across, and as they came ashore, 54people already started recognizing who they all were.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And when they were come out of the ship,.... Christ and his disciples, and were ashore,

straightway they knew him; that is, the men of that place, as in Mt. 14:35, :-; and so the Syriac, Arabic, and Persic versions read here, "the inhabitants of that country", the country of Gennesaret; they knew him, having seen and heard him before.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 14:22-36.

Mark 6:52

They considered not the miracle of the loaves - They did not remember or call to mind the “power” which Jesus had shown in feeding the five thousand by a miracle, and that, having done that, he had power also to save them from the storm.

Their heart was hardened - Their “mind” was dull to perceive it. This does not mean that they were “opposed” to Jesus, or that they had what we denominate “hardness of heart,” but simply that they were slow to perceive his power. They did not quickly learn, as they ought to have done, that he had all power, and could therefore allay the storm. The word “heart” is frequently used in this sense. See Ephesians 1:18, in Greek; Romans 1:21; Romans 2:15; 2 Corinthians 4:6.

Mark 6:54

They knew him - They “recollected” Jesus, because he had been there before and worked miracles.

Mark 6:56

The border of his garment - Compare the notes at Matthew 9:20.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Mark 6:54. They knew him — επιγνοντες, They recollected him; for he had before preached and wrought miracles in different places of the same country.
