Contextual Overview

1 He went on to say, "In solemn truth I tell you that some of those who are standing here will certainly not taste death till they have seen the Kingdom of God already come in power." 2 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, and brought them alone, apart from the rest, up a high mountain; and in their presence His appearance underwent a change. 3 His garments also became dazzling with brilliant whiteness--such whiteness as no bleaching on earth could give. 4 Moreover there appeared to them Elijah accompanied by Moses; and the two were conversing with Jesus, 5 when Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, we are thankful to you that we are here. Let us put up three tents--one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6 For he knew not what to say: they were filled with such awe. 7 Then there came a cloud spreading over them, and a voice issued from the cloud, "This is my Son, dearly loved: listen to Him." 8 Instantly they looked round, and now they could no longer see any one, but themselves and Jesus. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, He very strictly forbad them to tell any one what they had seen "until after the Son of Man has risen from among the dead." 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, although frequently asking one another what was meant by the rising from the dead.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For he wist not what to say,.... He did not know what he should say, or what was proper to be said by him, at such a time, in such circumstances, and before such persons;

for they were sore afraid. The Persic version reads, "he was": and so the Latin translation of the Syriac, though that itself is, "they were"; for all three were filled with consternation at what they saw and heard; so that they were scarcely themselves, and knew not well what they said or did.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And after six days ... - See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 17:1-9.

Mark 9:3

No fuller - Rather, no “scourer.” The office of the person here mentioned was to “scour” or “whiten” cloth; not to “full” it, or to render it thicker.

Mark 9:6

He wist not - He “knew not.” He was desirous of saying something, and he knew not what would be proper.
