Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

a penny: Matthew 18:28, Matthew 20:2

image: This was the head of the emperor; the superscription his titles. Julius Cesar was the first who caused his image to be struck on the Roman coin; and Tiberius was emperor at this time. This therefore was a denarius of Cesar, ×“×™× ×¨× ×§×™×¡×¨ ×× ×”, as it is termed in the Talmud; and consequently this was respecting the tribute required by the Roman government.

Caesar's: Luke 20:22, Luke 2:1, Luke 3:1, Luke 23:2, Acts 11:28, Acts 25:8-12, Acts 26:32, Philippians 4:22

Reciprocal: Numbers 24:24 - and shall afflict Eber Matthew 22:20 - superscription Mark 12:16 - image

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Show me a penny,.... A Roman denarius, value seven pence halfpenny of our money. The Persic version adds, "they showed it, he asked of them"; and the Ethiopic version, "and they brought it, and he said unto them", as follows;

whose image and superscription hath it? for the penny had an head upon it, with something written, as the name of the emperor, whose image it was, his titles, the date of the coin, or some motto on it:

they answered and said, Caesar's; very likely Tiberius Caesar's, who was at that time emperor of Rome; :- and
