Sebab itu ia berkata kepada utusan-utusan Benhadad: "Katakanlah kepada tuanku raja: Segala yang pertama kali kausuruhkan kepada hambamu ini, aku akan melakukannya, tetapi tuntutan yang kemudian ini tidak dapat kupenuhi." Lalu pergilah utusan-utusan itu dan menyampaikan jawab itu kepada Benhadad.
Maka sebab itu titah baginda kepada utusan Benhadad itu: Katakanlah olehmu kepada baginda tuanku begini: Segala sesuatu yang tuanku suruh katakan kepada hamba dahulu, ia itu hendak hamba perbuat, tetapi perkara ini tiada boleh hamba perbuat. Hata, maka berjalanlah utusan itu, lalu dipersembahkannya sahutan ini kepada tuannya.

For the Lorde had closed vp all the wombes of the house of Abimelech, because of Abrahams wyfe.
Abimelech said: why hast thou done this vnto vs? one of the people myght lyghtly haue lyne by thy wyfe, and so shouldest thou haue brought sinne vpon vs.
And when the sonnes of Iacob (comming out of the fielde) hearde it, it greeued them, and they were not a little wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel, in that he had lien with Iacobs daughter, which thing ought not to be done.
And it came to passe, after three monethes one tolde Iuda, saying: Thamar thy daughter in lawe hath played the harlot, and with playing the harlot is become great with chylde. And Iuda sayde: Bryng her foorth, that she may be brent.
There is no man greater in the house then I, neither hath he kept any thyng from me but only thee, because thou art his wyfe: how then can I do euen this so great a wickednes, & sinne against God?
And Moyses said vnto Aaron: What did this people vnto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sinne vpon them?
And the Lorde plagued the people, because they made the calfe whiche Aaron made.

Wherefore he sent unto the messengers of Benhadad,.... Upon the advice the elders had given him, and encouraged thereby, though in a poor sneaking manner after all:
tell my lord the king, all that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; owning him as his lord, and himself as his servant, and promising to grant his first demand, though so insolent, in the sense he understood him, of paying tribute to him for it:
but this thing I may not do; to have not only all put into his hands, but his and his servant's houses to be searched and pillaged, because the elders of his people would not agree; and yet he seems to speak as if he himself would have submitted to it, but was restrained by his council:
and the messengers departed, and brought him word again; reported to Benhadad the answer they received from Ahab.
