¹ And Hezekia sent to all Israel and Iuda, and wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasse, that they shoulde come to the house of the lorde at Hierusalem, and offer passouer vnto the Lorde God of Israel. ² And the king helde a counsell with his lordes, and all the congregation of Hierusalem, to kepe the feast of passouer in the second moneth: ³ For they coulde not kepe it at that time, because the priestes were not sanctified sufficiently, neither was the people gathered together to Hierusalem. ⁴ And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation. ⁵ And they decreed that it shoulde be proclaymed throughout all Israel from Beerseba to Dan, that they shoulde come & holde the feast of Passouer vnto the Lord God of Israel at Hierusalem: For they had not done it of a great season, as it was written. ⁶ So the postes went with letters of the king and of his lordes throughout all Israel & Iuda, and at the commaundement of the king they sayde: Ye children of Israel, turne againe vnto the Lorde God of Abraham, Isahac, and Israel, and he wyll returne to the remnaunt that are escaped of you out of the hande of the kinges of the Assyrians. ⁷ And be not ye lyke your fathers and your brethren, which trespassed against the Lorde God of their fathers, which gaue them vp to be destroyed, as ye see. ⁸ And now be not ye stiffe necked lyke as were your fathers: but yeelde your selues vnto the Lord, and enter into his holy place which he hath sanctified for euer, and serue the Lord your God, and the fiercenesse of his wrath shall turne away from you. ⁹ For if ye turne againe vnto the Lorde, then shall your brethren and your children finde compassion in the presence of them that toke them captiue, and they shall come againe vnto this lande: For the Lorde your God is gratious and mercifull, and wyll not turne away his face from you, if ye conuert vnto him. ¹⁰ And so the postes went from citie to citie in the lande of Ephraim & Manasse, euen vnto Zabulon: but they laughed them to scorne, and mocked them.

And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah,.... Sent messengers to them, not only to the subjects of his own kingdom, Judah, but to all the Israelites that dwelt in it, who were come thither for the sake of religion, and the worship of God:

and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh; which are put for all the ten tribes, as appears from 2 Chronicles 30:10 and are distinguished from Israel in the preceding clause:

that they should come to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem; not that he laid his commands upon them to come, they not being his subjects, namely, those of the ten tribes; but he hereby admonished them of their duty, and gave them a kind invitation, signifying the doors of the temple were open for them, and they were welcome to come thither:

to keep the passover unto the Lord God of Israel; to the glory of his name, who was the common Lord of them all, and whose command it was to keep the passover, and that at Jerusalem, and nowhere else, see

Deuteronomy 16:1.

CHAPTER XXX

Hezekiah invites all Israel and Judah, and writes letters to

Ephraim and Manasseh to come up to Jerusalem, and hold a

passover to the Lord, 1-4.

The posts go out with the king's proclamation from Dan to

Beer-sheba, and pass from city to city through the coasts

of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Zebulun, but are generally mocked

in Israel, 5-10.

Yet several of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun, humble themselves,

and come to Jerusalem, 11.

But in Judah they are all of one heart, 12, 13.

They take away the idolatrous altars, kill the passover,

sprinkle the blood, and, as circumstances will permit,

sanctify the people, 14, 15.

Many having eaten of the passover, who were not purified

according to the law, Hezekiah prays for them; and the Lord

accepts his prayer, and heals them, 16-20.

Hezekiah exhorts them; and they hold the feast seven additional

days, fourteen in all, and the people greatly rejoice, 21-26.

The priests and the Levites bless the people, and God accepts

their prayers and thanksgivings, 27.

Verse 2 Chronicles 30:1. Hezekiah sent to all Israel — It is not easy to find out how this was permitted by the king of Israel; but it is generally allowed that Hoshea, who then reigned over Israel, was one of their best kings. And as the Jews allow that at this time both the golden calves had been carried away by the Assyrians,-that at Dan by Tiglath-pileser, and that at Bethel by Shalmaneser,-the people who chose to worship Jehovah at Jerusalem were freely permitted to do it, and Hezekiah had encouragement to make the proclamation in question.
