Tetapi berkatalah Yoab kepadanya: "Pada hari ini bukan engkau yang menjadi pembawa kabar, pada hari lain boleh engkau yang menyampaikan kabar, tetapi pada hari ini engkau tidak akan menyampaikan kabar karena anak raja sudah mati."
Tetapi kata Yoab kepadanya: Bukan engkau orang yang patut membawa kabar pada hari ini: pada lain hari juga aku menyuruhkan dikau kelak membawa kabar yang begitu, karena pada hari ini tiada boleh engkau membawa kabar yang baik, tegal putera baginda sudah mati.

Doubtlesse our owne wickednesse doth rewarde vs: but Lorde do thou accordyng to thy name, though our transgression and sinnes be many, and agaynst thee haue we sinned.
Beholde, the hire of labourers, which haue reaped downe your fieldes, which hire is of you kept backe by fraude, cryeth: and the cryes of them which haue reaped, are entred into the eares of the Lorde Sabaoth.

And Joab said unto him, thou shall not bear tidings this day,.... Because Joab knew the tidings of Absalom's death would not be acceptable to the king; and Ahimaaz being a good man, and the son of a priest, for whom Joab had a respect, he would not send the tidings by him, which he was sensible would not recommend him to the king:
but thou shalt bear tidings another day; when any salvation is wrought, or victory obtained, the tidings of which will be welcome:
but this day thou shall bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead; and thou must carry the news concerning his death, which it is not proper thou shouldest, being a priest, nor will it be to thine advantage.
