²³ And it came to passe, that when ye hearde the voyce out of the middes of the darkenesse (for the mountayne dyd burne with fire) then ye came vnto me, with the captaynes of your tribes, and your elders, ²⁴ And ye sayde: Beholde, the Lorde our God hath shewed vs his glorie and his greatnesse, and we haue hearde his voyce out of the middes of the fire: we haue seene this day that God doth talke with man, and he yet lyueth. ²⁵ Nowe therfore why shoulde we dye? that this great fire shoulde consume vs: If we heare the voyce of the Lord our God any more, we shall dye: ²⁶ For what fleshe hath it ben that euer hearde the voyce of the lyuyng God speakyng out of the middes of the fire (as we haue done) and yet dyd lyue? ²⁷ Go thou and heare all that the Lorde our God sayth, and tell thou vnto vs all that the Lord our God sayth vnto thee, and we wyll heare it, and do it. ²⁸ And the Lorde hearde the voyce of your wordes when ye spake vnto me, and the Lorde sayde vnto me: I haue hearde the voyce of the wordes of this people, which they haue spoken vnto thee: they haue well sayde all that they haue spoken. ²⁹ Oh that there were such an heart in them that they woulde feare me, & kepe all my comaundementes alway, that it myght go well with them, and with their childen for euer? ³⁰ Go, and say vnto them, Get you into your tentes agayne: ³¹ But stande thou here by me, and I wyll tell thee all the comaundementes, ordinaunces, & lawes, which thou shalt teache them, that they may do them in the lande which I geue the to possesse. ³² Take heede therfore that ye do in deede as the Lord your God hath commaunded you, and turne not aside, either to the right hande, or to the left:

Go thou near,.... To the mount, and to God on it:

and hear all that the Lord our God shall say; for they supposed, by the continuance of the Lord on the mount, and the fire burning on it, that he had more to say, which they were not averse to hear; but desired it might be not immediately delivered to them, but by the means of Moses; the sound of the words, and the sight of the fire, being so terrible to them:

and speak thou unto us all that the Lord our God shall speak unto thee: they did not doubt, knowing the faithfulness of Moses, his declaring all unto them that should be told him by the Lord; and they were desirous that he should, they did not want to have anything withheld from them, only they could not bear to see and hear things immediately from the Lord:

and we will hear it and do it; hearken to it, and receive it, as the word of God, and not man, and yield a ready and cheerful obedience, even to everything that should be required; see Exodus 20:19.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

These verses contain a much fuller narrative of the events briefly described in Exodus 20:18-21. Here it is important to call attention to the fact that it was on the entreaties of the people that Moses had taken on him to be the channel of communication between God and them. God approved Deuteronomy 5:28 the request of the people, because it showed a feeling of their own unworthiness to enter into direct communion with God. The terrors of Sinai had done their work; they had awakened the consciousness of sin.
