²⁰ When he was demaunded of the pharisees, when the kyngdome of God shoulde come: he aunswered them, and sayde, The kyngdome of God shall not come with obseruation. ²¹ Neither shall they say, lo here, or lo there: For beholde, the kyngdome of God is within you. ²² And he sayde vnto the disciples: the dayes wyll come, when ye shall desyre to see one day of the sonne of man, and ye shall not see it. ²³ And they shall say to you, See here, see there: Go not after them, nor folowe them. ²⁴ For as the lyghtnyng, that lyghtneth out of the one part that is vnder heauen, and shyneth vnto the other part which is vnder heauen: so shall the sonne of man be in his daye. ²⁵ But first must he suffer many thynges, and be refused of this nation. ²⁶ And as it was in the dayes of Noe: so shall it be also in the dayes of the sonne of man. ²⁷ They dyd eate, and drynke, they maryed wiues, and were maryed, euen vnto the same day that Noe went into the Arke: and the fludde came, & destroyed them all. ²⁸ Lykewyse also as it was in the dayes of Lot: they dyd eate, they dranke, they bought, they solde, they planted, they buylded: ²⁹ But euen the same day that Lot went out of Sodome, it rayned fire and brimstone from heauen, and destroyed them all.

But first must he suffer many things,.... By cruel mockings, spitting, buffeting, scourging, and, at last, death itself; all which must be, and were before his day came, or he entered into his glory, or came in it:

and be rejected of this generation; as the Messiah, and be treated with the utmost scorn and contempt, and in the most base and ignominious manner: being put to the death of the cross, and hanged upon the accursed tree: all which were necessary, "must" be; on account of the purposes and decrees of God; the covenant engagements of Christ; the predictions of the prophets of the Old Testament, and his own; and the salvation of his people.
