⁴⁰ And the Lorde sayde vnto Moyses: Number all ye first borne that are males among the chyldren of Israel, from a moneth olde and aboue, and take the number of their names. ⁴¹ And thou shalt appoynt the Leuites to me (for I am the Lorde) for all the first borne of the children of Israel, and the cattell of the Leuites for all the first gendred of the cattell of the chyldren of Israel. ⁴² And Moyses numbred, as the Lorde commaunded hym, all the first borne of the chyldren of Israel. ⁴³ And all the first borne males, rehearsed by their names, from a moneth olde and aboue, accordyng to their number, were twentie and two thousande, two hundred and threscore and thirteene. ⁴⁴ And the Lorde spake vnto Moyses, saying: ⁴⁵ Take the Leuites for al the first borne of the chyldren of Israel, and the cattell of the Leuites for their cattell, & the Leuites shalbe myne: I am the Lorde. ⁴⁶ And for the redeeming of the two hundred and threscore and thirteene, which are mo then the Leuites in the first borne of the chyldren of Israel. ⁴⁷ Take fiue sicles of euery head, after the wayght of the sanctuarie, the sicle contaynyng twentie gerahs. ⁴⁸ And geue the money wherewith the odde number of them is redeemed, vnto Aaron and his sonnes. ⁴⁹ And Moyses toke the redemption money of them that were redeemed, beyng mo then the Leuites:

Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel,.... The Lord had declared before that he had taken them, and now he bids Moses take them, who had numbered them, and give them to Aaron, instead of the firstborn, whose numbers were also taken for this purpose:

and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; but not to be given to Aaron and his sons, or to the priests for their use, but to remain with the Levites for their use, who were now separated from the other tribes, and taken into the service of God; and as they were dedicated to God, so their cattle likewise for their support as his ministers:

and the Levites shall be mine; in a special manner his, being devoted to his service:

I [am] the Lord; who had a right to do this, and expected to be obeyed in it.

This redemption money (see the marginal references) would perhaps be exacted from the parents of the “youngest” children of the 22,273 Numbers 3:43. The cattle of the Levites was doubtless taken in the gross as an equivalent for the first-born cattle of the other tribes, which of course, no less than the first-born of men, belonged to the Lord; and in future would have to be redeemed Numbers 18:15; Deuteronomy 15:19.
