1 主よ、わたしはあなたに寄り頼む。とこしえにわたしをはずかしめないでください。2 あなたの義をもってわたしを助け、わたしを救い出してください。あなたの耳を傾けて、わたしをお救いください。3 わたしのためにのがれの岩となり、わたしを救う堅固な城となってください。あなたはわが岩、わが城だからです。4 わが神よ、悪しき者の手からわたしを救い、不義、残忍な人の支配から、わたしを救い出してください。5 主なる神よ、あなたはわたしの若い時からのわたしの望み、わたしの頼みです。6 わたしは生れるときからあなたに寄り頼みました。あなたはわたしを母の胎から取り出されたかたです。わたしは常にあなたをほめたたえます。7 わたしは多くの人に怪しまれるような者となりました。しかしあなたはわたしの堅固な避け所です。8 わたしの口はひねもす、あなたをたたえるさんびと、頌栄とをもって満たされています。9 わたしが年老いた時、わたしを見離さないでください。わたしが力衰えた時、わたしを見捨てないでください。10 わたしの敵はわたしについて語り、わたしのいのちをうかがう者は共にはかって、11 「神は彼を見捨てた。彼を助ける者がないから彼を追って捕えよ」と言います。12 神よ、わたしに遠ざからないでください。わが神よ、すみやかに来てわたしを助けてください。13 わたしにあだする者を恥じさせ、滅ぼしてください。わたしをそこなわんとする者を、そしりと、はずかしめとをもっておおってください。14 しかしわたしは絶えず望みをいだいて、いよいよあなたをほめたたえるでしょう。15 わたしの口はひねもすあなたの義と、あなたの救とを語るでしょう。わたしはその数を知らないからです。16 わたしは主なる神の大能のみわざを携えゆき、ただあなたの義のみを、ほめたたえるでしょう。17 神よ、あなたはわたしを若い時から教えられました。わたしはなお、あなたのくすしきみわざを宣べ伝えます。18 神よ、わたしが年老いて、しらがとなるとも、あなたの力をきたらんとするすべての代に宣べ伝えるまで、わたしを見捨てないでください。19 神よ、あなたの大能と義とは高い天にまで及ぶ。あなたは大いなる事をなされました。神よ、だれかあなたに等しい者があるでしょうか。20 あなたはわたしを多くの重い悩みにあわされましたが、再びわたしを生かし、地の深い所から引きあげられるでしょう。21 あなたはわたしの誉を増し、再びわたしを慰められるでしょう。22 わが神よ、わたしはまた立琴をもってあなたと、あなたのまこととをほめたたえます。イスラエルの聖者よ、わたしは琴をもってあなたをほめ歌います。23 わたしがあなたにむかってほめ歌うとき、わがくちびるは喜び呼ばわり、あなたがあがなわれたわが魂もまた喜び呼ばわるでしょう。24 わたしの舌もまたひねもすあなたの義を語るでしょう。わたしをそこなわんとした者が恥じあわてたからです。

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust - See the notes at Psalms 25:2. Compare Psalms 22:4-5; Psalms 31:1.

Let me never be put to confusion - Let me never be ashamed; that is, Let me not be so disappointed in the trust that I repose in thee as to have occasion to feel ashamed that I have done it.

PSALM LXXI

The prophet, in confidence, prays for God's favour, 1-5;

recounts God's kindness to him from youth to old age, 6-9;

shows what his adversaries plot against him, and prays for

their confusion, 10-13;

promises fidelity, and determines to be a diligent preacher of

righteousness even in old age, 16-19;

takes encouragement in God's mercy, and foresees the confusion

of all his adversaries, 20-24.

NOTES ON PSALM LXXI

There is no title to this Psalm either in the Hebrew or Chaldee; and the reason is, it was written as a part of the preceding Psalm, as appears by about twenty-seven of Kennicott's and De Rossi's MSS. The Vulgate, Septuagint, AEthiopic, and Arabic, have, "A Psalm of David for the sons of Jonadab, and the first of those who were led captives." For the first, second, and third verses, see the notes on their parallels, Psalms 31:1-3.
