Contextual Overview

30While they were on the way, a report reached David: “Absalom struck down all the king’s sons; not even one of them survived!” 30 It happened, while they were in the way, that the news came to David, saying, Avshalom has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left. 30 And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left. 30 While they were on the way, the message came to David, "Absalom has killed all the sons of the king, and not one of them was left." 30 While they were on the way, news came to David, "Absalom has struck down all the king's sons, and not one of them is left." 30 While the king's sons were on their way, the news came to David, "Absalom has killed all of the king's sons! Not one of them is left alive!" 30 While they were still on their way, the following report reached David: "Absalom has killed all the king's sons; not one of them is left!" 30Now it happened while they were on the way [back home], that the [exaggerated] report came to David, "Absalom has killed all the king's sons, and not one of them is left." 30 Now it was while they were on the way that the report came to David, saying, "Absalom has struck and killed all the king's sons, and not one of them is left." 30 And while they were in the way, tydings came to Dauid, saying, Absalom hath slaine al the Kings sonnes, & there is not one of them left.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

So Absalom fled,.... This is the third time it is mentioned, and the reason of it here Abarbinel thinks is, that when he first fled to his grandfather, he used to stand openly in the court of his palace, and go with him wherever he went from place to place; but when he understood that his father mourned so for the death of Amnon, he was afraid he would send some person to lay hold on him, and take vengeance on him; and therefore he would go no more with the king from place to place, but went and abode in Geshur always, which was a fortified city, as it follows:

and went to Geshur, and was there three years: and never went out of it, until he was fetched by Joab, as 2 Samuel 14:23 relates; nor is there anything in 2 Samuel 13:37 disturbed and mutilated, as Spinosa r intimates, but the whole is very expressive and emphatic.
