Contextual Overview

⁴¹Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the trumpet. "Why is the city in such a loud uproar?" asked Joab. ⁴²As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. "Come in," said Adonijah, "for you are a man of valor. You must be bringing good news." ⁴³"Not at all," Jonathan replied. "Our lord King David has made Solomon king. ⁴⁴And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with Cherethites and Pelethites, and they have set him on the king's mule. ⁴⁵Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there with rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear. ⁴⁶Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. ⁴⁷The king's servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David, saying, 'May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.' And the king has bowed in worship on his bed, ⁴⁸saying, 'May the LORD God of Israel be praised! Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have seen it.'" ⁴⁹At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.⁵⁰But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And all the guests that [were] with Adonijah [were] afraid,.... Though many of them were military men, the general of the army, and the captains thereof, 1 Kings 1:19; yet they were struck with a panic, their courage failed them, they had no spirit left in them, their hearts became as weak as water; had they exerted themselves according to their character, betaken themselves to arms, and put themselves at the head of their troops in favour of Adonijah, it would have given Solomon and his friends a great deal of trouble; no doubt this panic was of God:

and rose up, and went every man his way; or to his house, as the Arabic version; on hearing what Jonathan reported, they immediately rose up from table in great haste, and made the best of their way to their houses, that it might not be known that they had been with Adonijah.
