Kings 6:10"> 10 Entonces el rey de Israel envió á aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho y amonestádole; y guardóse de allí, no una vez ni dos. Kings 6:11"> 11 Y el corazón del rey de Siria fué turbado de esto; y llamando á sus siervos, díjoles: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel? Kings 6:12"> 12 Entonces uno de los siervos dijo: No, rey, señor mío; sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu más secreta cámara. Kings 6:13"> 13 Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe á tomarlo. Y fuéle dicho: He aquí él está en Dothán. Kings 6:14"> 14 Entonces envió el rey allá gente de á caballo, y carros, y un grande ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y cercaron la ciudad. Kings 6:15"> 15 Y levantándose de mañana el que servía al varón de Dios, para salir, he aquí el ejército que tenía cercada la ciudad, con gente de á caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ­Ah, señor mío! ¿qué haremos? Kings 6:16"> 16 Y él le dijo: No hayas miedo: porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos. Kings 6:17"> 17 Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Ruégote, oh Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos del mozo, y miró: y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de á caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo. Kings 6:18"> 18 Y luego que los Siros descendieron á él, oró Eliseo á Jehová, y dijo: Ruégote que hieras á esta gente con ceguedad. E hiriólos con ceguedad, conforme al dicho de Eliseo. Kings 6:19"> 19 Después les dijo Eliseo: No es este el camino, ni es esta la ciudad; seguidme, que yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y guiólos á Samaria. Kings 6:20"> 20 Y así que llegaron á Samaria, dijo Eliseo: Jehová, abre los ojos de éstos, para que vean. Y Jehová abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y halláronse en medio de Samaria. Kings 6:21"> 21 Y cuando el rey de Israel los hubo visto, dijo á Eliseo: ¿Herirélos, padre mío? Kings 6:22"> 22 Y él le respondió: No los hieras; ¿herirías tú á los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y se vuelvan á sus señores. Kings 6:23"> 23 Entonces les fué aparejada grande comida: y como hubieron comido y bebido, enviólos, y ellos se volvieron á su señor. Y nunca más vinieron cuadrillas de Siria á la tierra de Israel. Kings 6:24"> 24 Después de esto aconteció, que Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó todo su ejército, y subió, y puso cerco á Samaria. Kings 6:25"> 25 Y hubo grande hambre en Samaria, teniendo ellos cerco sobre ella; tanto, que la cabeza de un asno era vendida por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta de un cabo de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata. Kings 6:26"> 26 Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le dió voces, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío. Kings 6:27"> 27 Y él dijo: Si no te salva Jehová, ¿de dónde te tengo de salvar yo? ¿del alfolí, ó del lagar? Kings 6:28"> 28 Y díjole el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Kings 6:30"> 30 Y como el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro: y llegó á ver el pueblo el saco que traía interiormente sobre su carne. Kings 6:31"> 31 Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Saphat quedare sobre él hoy. Kings 6:32"> 32 Estaba á la sazón Eliseo sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos: y el rey envió á él un hombre. Mas antes que el mensajero viniese á él, dijo él á los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto como este hijo del homicida me envía á quitar la cabeza? Kings 6:33"> 33 Aun estaba él hablando con ellos, y he aquí el mensajero que descendía á él; y dijo: Ciertamente este mal de Jehová viene. ¿Para qué tengo de esperar más á Jehová?

And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha,.... Or the disciples of the prophets, as the Targum:

behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us: their numbers were so increased, that there was not room enough for them in the house they dwelt in with the prophet; which increase was owing, the Jews z say, to the departure of Gehazi last mentioned, who was a bad man, and used the disciples so ill, that they could not stay in the college; but, when he was gone, they flocked in great numbers; but rather it was owing to the very instructive ministry and wonderful miracles of Elisha: the place where the prophet and his disciples now dwelt seems to be Gilgal, 2 Kings 4:38.

The writer returns here to the series of miracles which Elisha performed for the benefit of the prophetical schools under his care. The connection, in this point of view, is with 2 Kings 4:44.

The place where we dwell with thee - literally, “the place where we sit before thee,” i. e. “the place where we assemble and sit to bear thy teaching.” Elisha visited the sons of the prophets in circuit, staying a short time at each place where a “school” was established. Perhaps he was now visiting Jericho. Compare 2 Kings 2:5.

CHAPTER VI

The sons of the prophets wish to enlarge their dwelling-place,

and go to the banks of Jordan to cut down wood, when one of

them drops his axe into the water, which Elisha causes to

swim. 1-7.

Elisha, understanding all the secret designs of the king of

Syria against Israel, informs the king of Israel of them,

8-10.

The king of Syria, finding that Elisha had thus penetrated his

secrets and frustrated his attempts, sends a great host to

Dothan, to take the prophet; the Lord strikes them with

blindness; and Elisha leads the whole host to Samaria, and

delivers them up to the king of Israel, 11-19.

The Lord opens their eyes, and they see their danger, 20.

But the king of Israel is prevented from destroying them; and,

at the order of the prophet, gives them meat and drink, and

dismisses them to their master, 21-23.

Ben-hadad besieges Samaria, and reduces the city to great

distress, of which several instances are given, 24-30.

The king of Israel vows the destruction of Elisha, and sends

to have him beheaded, 31-33.

NOTES ON CHAP. VI

Verse 2 Kings 6:1. The place - is too strait for us. — Notwithstanding the general profligacy of Israel, the schools of the prophets increased. This was no doubt owing to the influence of Elisha.
