Verse 1

Athaliah. For genealogy see App-55.

she arose, &c. Another of the ten occasions of deaths being caused by a woman. See note on Judges 4:21.

destroyed: or thought she did. They were left for dead.


Verse 2

Jehosheba. She was the wife of Jehoiada, the high priest (2 Chronicles 22:11); Jehoiada being brother-in-law to Ahaziah (2 Chronicles 22:11), and therefore uncle to Joash.

from among. Expressive words, pointing to our Joash, raised from the dead and now hidden in the house of God on high; and we with Him (Colossians 3:1-3).


Verse 3

hid in the house of the LORD. This was the safest possible place: for it had been broken up, and everything removed to the house of Baal (2 Chronicles 24:7) The Temple courts were deserted. Hence, Jehoiada and the priests were plotting for the restoration of the rightful heir. See note on Libnah, 2 Kings 8:22.

six years. The number of man"s defiance and disorder. See App-10.


Verse 4

Jehoiada. See note on Jehosheba, 2 Kings 11:2.

rulers. For their names see 2 Chronicles 23:1.

the king"s son. Compare 2 Chronicles 23:3.


Verse 5

that enter in = must come inside.

shall even be = and must be.


Verse 6

shall be = must be.


Verse 10

king David"s. All prepared by him against such a day as this (2 Samuel 8:7).


Verse 12

gave him. The Figure of speech Zeugma (App-6), by which the second verb has to be thus supplied.

testimony. See note on Exodus 17:14, and App-47.


Verse 14

a pillar = the pillar.

Treason, Treason. Figure of speech Epizeuxis, for great emphasis.


Verse 16

laid hands on her = made way for her.


Verse 20

land rejoiced. When? When the usurper had
