Verse 1

this day: i.e. it is declared this day that, &c. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 , where the action is put for the declaration concerning it. Punctuate thus: "Hear, O Israel this day", &c. See note on Deuteronomy 4:26 .

nations. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 , for the countries inhabited by them.

Verse 2

children = sons.

Anakims. The descendants of Anak; the progeny of the second irruption of fallen angels (see Genesis 6:4 and App-25 , and compare Joshua 11:22 .

Verse 3

the LORD thy God = Jehovah thy 'Elohim. App-4 .

consuming fire. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6 .

shall destroy. Hebrew. shamad, exterminate.

and destroy. Hebrew. 'abad, cause to perish.

quickly. See note on Deuteronomy 7:22 .

as = according as. See Exodus 23:29 , Exodus 23:30 . Moab subdued (Judges 3:30 ); Midian subdued (Judges 8:28 ); Ammon subdued (Judges 11:33 ); Philistines subdued (1 Samuel 7:13 ). Compare Nehemiah 9:24 .

thy fathers. All three named in connection with the oath.

ye came. So some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, and Syriac; but Hebrew text reads "thou camest".
