Ezekiel 26

Verses 1-21

1. Intro:
   1. Ch.26-28 deal with the judgment of more gentile nations…Tyre & Sidon.
      1. Ezekiel paints 3 pictures of these proud & wealthy cities.
         1. [1] The scraping of a rock [2] the sinking of a ship [3] The dethroning of a king.
2. TYRE THE SINKING SHIP! (26)
   1. ​​​​​​​Tyre – “a rock” (tsor). [20m north of Acre/Aco. Sidon is another 20 north]
      1. It was a prominent commercial center & seaport with 2 harbors.
         1. [One on the mainland & one on an island 1 ½ m. off shore]
         2. They were 1^st to navigate the Mediterranean waters.
         3. Their god was Melkart, whom the Greeks called Hercules.
      2. The city of Tyre seemed impregnable, but Nebuchadnezzar would besiege it (13 yrs); & Alexander the Great would bring it to ruins (in 7 months; in 322bc).
         1. Alexander built a land bridge to the city & attacked it from both the land bridge & sea.
   2. (2) Tyre sin? – It gloated over Jerusalem’s devastation.
      1. Tyre viewed Jerusalem as a rival in trade. So rejoiced at her fall.
   3. (4) Top of a rock – all that would be left would be bare rock where fishermen would dry their nets.
   4. (11) Pillars – Obelisk (stone, square base, tapers to top, like pyramid)
      1. Tyre had 2 as you entered harbor.
   5. Such a mighty City, but great was its fall. What can we learn from Tyre?
      1. Read Jer.9:23,24.
   6. The city that was exulted over the sea would now be submerged beneath it.
   7. What did Jesus have to say about Tyre & Sidon?
      1. Mt.11:21,22 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
