Psalms 106:19 — Horeb. So called here; not because the word of a later writer, but because "Horeb" was the higher name ("the mount of God", Exodus 3:1 . 1 Kings 19:8 ), in order to show the heinousness of the sin.

Psalms 142:1 — Title. Maschil = Instruction. See App-65 . of David = by David. when . . . cave. Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1 ) or En-gedi (1 Samuel 24:3 ). The last of eight Psalms referring to this subject. the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .

Proverbs 13:24 — spareth = withholdeth. Illustrations: Eli (1 Samuel 3:13 ; 1 Samuel 4:11 ); David (2 Samuel 13:39 ; 2 Samuel 14:25 . 1 Kings 1:6 ). chasteneth him betimes = carefully seeketh correction (or discipline) for him: or, seeketh early, &c.

Proverbs 29:5 — man. Hebrew. geber. App-14 . Spreadeth a net, &c. Illustrations: woman of Tekoah (2 Samuel 14:3 , 2 Samuel 14:19 , 2 Samuel 14:20 , 2 Samuel 14:28 , 2 Samuel 14:29 ); spies (Luke 20:21 ). feet = footsteps.

Proverbs 3:12 — whom, &c. Joseph (Genesis 37:23-36 ; Genesis 39:20 ; Genesis 40:23 . Compare Psalms 105:18 ); Israel (Deuteronomy 8:3-5 , Deuteronomy 8:15 , Deuteronomy 8:16 ); Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:35-37 ); Paul (2 Corinthians 12:7 ).

Isaiah 17:8 — the groves = the Asherahs. See App-42 . Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 34:13 .Deuteronomy 7:5 ; Deuteronomy 12:3 ; Deuteronomy 16:21 ). App-79 . images = sun images. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 26:30 ); both mentioned again (Isaiah 27:9 ).

Isaiah 36:4 — the great king. Contrast Psalms 47:2 . trustest = hast confided. Hebrew. batah. App-69 . See Hezekiah's "Songs of the Degrees" (Psalms 121:3 ; Psalms 125:1 , Psalms 125:2 ; Psalms 127:1 ; Psalms 130:5-8 ; and App-67 ).

Jeremiah 31:40 — fields. Hebrew text reads "dry places", but the margin, with some codices and seven early printed editions, Authorized Version and Revised Version, read "fields". holy. See note on Exodus 3:6 . for ever = for times age-abiding: for aye.

Jeremiah 36:4 — Baruch = Blessed. The first mention of him chronologically. Other references to him in Jeremiah 32:12 ; Jeremiah 43:3 , Jeremiah 43:6 ; Jeremiah 45:1-5 . He was brother to Seraiah. Compare Jeremiah 32:12 with Jeremiah 51:59 .

Amos 3:13 — the house of Jacob: i.e. the whole of the natural seed. See note on Amos 3:1 . God. Hebrew. Elohim . App-4 . saith the Lord God, the God of hosts = [is] the oracle of Adonai, the Elohim of Zebaioth.

Zephaniah 1:5 — worship the host of heaven. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 4:19 ; Deuteronomy 17:3 ). App-92 . Compare 2 Kings 23:11 , 2 Kings 23:12 .Jeremiah 19:13 . Malcham = king-god, or king-idol. Syriac and Vulgate read "Milcom".

Zechariah 8:17 — evil. Hebrew. ra a '. App-44 love no false oath. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 6:3 ; Leviticus 19:12 ). all these are things that I hate. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac, read "all these things do I hate".

Mark 14:45 — goeth = cometh up. Master, Master = Rabbi, Rabbi. Figure of speech Epizeuxis ( App-6 ) = great Rabbi. Notethat Judas never spoke of or to Him as "Lord". Compare 1 Corinthians 12:3 kissed = effusively kissed. See note on Matthew 26:49 .

Luke 10:33 — journeyed. Greek. hodeuo. Occurs only here. came where he was. A beautiful type of the Lord. And the end is seen in John 14:3 . where he was = to (kata, as above) him. had compassion = was moved with compassion.

Luke 22:22 — the Son of man. See App-98 . as = according as. Greek kata. App-104 . was determined = has been determined. See Acts 2:23 ; Acts 3:18 ; Acts 4:27 , Acts 4:28 . Greek. dia. App-104 .Luke 22:1 .

John 1:28 — Bethabara . All the texts read Bethania (with the Syriac) Identified by Conder and Wilson with Makht-Ababarah, near Jericho. Not uncommon then or now for two or more places to have the same name. See on John 11:3 .

Acts 16:33 — the same = in (Greek. en. App-104 .) the same. washed = bathed them. Greek. louo. App-136 . their stripes = from (Greek. apo. App-104 .) their wounds. straightway . Greek. parachrema. Same as immediately ( V . 26). See note on Acts 3:7 .

Acts 7:53 — have. Omit. by = unto. Greek. eis. App-104 . disposition. Greek. diatage. Only here and Romans 13:2 . The Syriac reads, "by the precept". Compare Acts 7:38 and Galatians 1:3 , Galatians 1:19 . have, &c. = guarded it not.

Romans 13:10 — Love . App-135 . worketh . See Romans 2:10 . ill . Greek. kak o s , translated "evil" in verses: Romans 13:3 , Romans 13:4 . the, the. Omit. fulfilling = fulfilment, or fulness. Greek. pleroma. See Romans 11:12 , Romans 11:25 .
