Esther 6:10 — Make haste = be expeditious. Hebrew. mahar, as in Esther 5:5 ; not dahaph (to urge oneself), as in Esther 6:12 ; Esther 3:15 ; or bahal (to hurry away), as in Esther 6:14 ; Esther 8:14 . as = according as.

Psalms 110:6 — heathen = nations. Compare Joel 3:9-17 . Zechariah 14:1-4 . He shall fill, &c. = "Let Him judge among the peoples [a region] full of corpses. heads = head (Revelation 19:11-21 ): i.e. the Antichrist. many countries = a great land.

Psalms 119:96 — all perfection = an end, or limit to all things. Compare Job 26:10 ; Job 28:3 . Thy commandment, &c. = spacious exceedingly [are] Thy commandments: i.e. including all (as opposed to "end"). they are = it [is]: i.e. the Law containing the commandments.

Psalms 39:6 — every man. Hebrew. 'Ish . App-14 . walketh: i.e. walketh to and fro, or habitually. in a vain shew = only in a mere form. Hebrew. ze lem. Occurs thirty-three times. Always rendered image, except here and Daniel 3:19 ("form").

Psalms 51:6 — in the inward parts. More than the external acts. Hebrew. tuchoth. Only here and Job 38:36 . make me, &c. See note on Job 28:28 . We need this making, for this wisdom is from above. Compare 2 Timothy 3:15 .

Psalms 80:14 — Return. Compare verses: Psalms 80:3 , Psalms 80:7 , Psalms 80:19 , and see the Structure above. and. Note the Figure of speech Polysyndeton ( App-6 ) for emphasis. Almost an Ellipsis = "[once more] look down, [once more] behold, [once more] visit".

Proverbs 12:25 — Heaviness = Anxiety (feminine) stoop = bowed down. Illustrations: Ezra (Ezra 9:3 Ezra 10:6 ); Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:4 ); David (Psalms 40:12 ); Jeremiah (Jeremiah 8:18 ). maketh, &c. = maketh [the man] glad [by driving it (feminine), the anxiety (feminine), away].

Proverbs 18:13 — before he heareth it. Illustrations: David (2 Samuel 16:4 ; 2 Samuel 19:24-30 ); Ahasuerus (Esther 3:10 . Compare Proverbs 8:5 , &c.); Darius (Daniel 6:9 . Compare Proverbs 6:14 , Proverbs 6:18 ); magistrates (Acts 16:37-39 ).

Proverbs 23:2 — And put = Then thou wilt put. a man given, &c. Illustrations: Esau (Genesis 25:30 ); Isaac (Genesis 25:28 ; Genesis 27:4 ); those referred to in Philippians 1:3 , Philippians 1:18 , Philippians 1:19 . appetite = soul. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13 .

Proverbs 29:1 — often reproved, &c. Illustrations: Antediluvians (Genesis 6:0 , 1 Peter 3:20 . 2 Peter 2:5 .Luke 17:26 , Luke 17:27 ): Pharaoh (Exodus 7:13 , Exodus 7:14 ; Exodus 8:15 ; Exodus 10:1 , Exodus 10:20 , Exodus 10:27 ).

Ecclesiastes 12:13 — the conclusion. See note on "the end", Ecclesiastes 3:11 . God. Hebrew. 'eth ha-'Elohim = the [true and only] God; the great Creator, who throughout the book is put in contrast with man (Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 .) the creature. App-4 .

Ecclesiastes 2:16 — remembrance = memorial, as in Ecclesiastes 1:11 , Ecclesiastes 1:11 . of = for. for ever. See note on Ecclesiastes 1:4 . seeing that which now is = for, as in time past. as the fool. Compare Psalms 49:10 . 2 Samuel 3:33 .

Isaiah 16:1 — lamb = tribute lamb. to the ruler = of the ruler: i.e. Judah, as Mesha king of Moab had done (2 Kings 3:4 ). Sela. Now Petra (so called by the Romans) in Mount Seir, near Mount Hor (2 Kings 14:7 ).

Isaiah 30:15 — confidence = trust: i.e. trust [in Jehovah]. Hebrew. batah , as in Isaiah 30:12 . App-69 . strength = real power. Hebrew. geburah. Not the same word as in verses: Isaiah 30:2 , Isaiah 30:3 , but the same as in Isaiah 28:6 .

Isaiah 52:10 — holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 . arm. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for the wonders wrought by it. Also Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6 . eyes, &c. = sight, or view. Compare Isaiah 40:5 ; Isaiah 49:26 .

Jeremiah 13:11 — house of Israel. See note on Jeremiah 2:4 . house of Judah. See note on Jeremiah 3:18 . saith the LORD = [is] Jehovah's oracle. that they might be unto Me for a people. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 19:5 ). App-92 .

Jeremiah 20:10 — fear on every side. Hebrew. magor-missabib, as in Jeremiah 20:3 . Compare Jeremiah 6:25 ; Jeremiah 46:5 , &c. familiars = those whom I am wont to salute. See App-85 . enticed = induced, or persuaded. Hebrew. pathah , Jeremiah 20:7 .

Jeremiah 22:22 — wind. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . pastors. Put for rulers of all kinds. See notes on Jeremiah 2:8 ; Jeremiah 3:15 , &c. wickedness. Hebrew. ra'a'. App-44 . Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for the cause of the calamity.
