Ezekiel 29:8 — I Will bring a sword. This phrase is peculiar to Ezekiel. See Ezekiel 5:17 ; Ezekiel 6:3 ; Ezekiel 11:8 ; Ezekiel 14:17 ; Ezekiel 29:8 ; Ezekiel 33:2 ; In Leviticus it is: "I will draw out the sword after you". Compare Leviticus 26:33 . man. Hebrew, 'adam . App-14 .
Hosea 13:13 — shall come, &c. Isaiah 13:8 . Jeremiah 30:6 . Matthew 24:8 . an unwise son. Note the Figure of speech Meiosis ( App-6 ), for emphasis, meaning a most foolish son. stay long = linger. in the place, &c.: i.e. in the act of being born. Compare 2 Kings 19:3 . children = sons.
Hosea 6:11 — he hath set = there is appointed. harvest: i.e. a reaping time of judgment. See Jeremiah 51:33 .Joel 3:13 ; and compare Proverbs 22:8 . Galatians 1:6 , Galatians 1:7 , Galatians 1:8 . for thee. Some codices, with two early printed editions and Aramaean, read "for her". returned = turned again.
Amos 3:10 — they know not. Marking the Structure. right = straight forward. Hebrew. nakah . A rare word. Occurs only in 2 Samuel 15:3 .Proverbs 8:9 ("plain"); Amo 24:26 . Isaiah 26:10 ("uprightness"); Amo 30:10 ("right things"); Amo 57:2 ("uprightness"); Amo 59:14 ("equity"). saith the Lord = [is] Jehovah's oracle.
Micah 7:17 — lick the dust. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), for the utmost humiliation, as in Genesis 3:14 . Compare Psalms 72:9 . Isaiah 49:23 . move = come quaking. holes = fastnesses. Hebrew. misgereth. worms. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 32:24 , the same word). Occurs only in these two places.
Matthew 26:29 — not = by no means. Greek. ou me. App-105 . This might have been soon verified, had the nation repented at the proclamation of Peter (Acts 3:19-26 ). But now it is postponed. this fruit of the vine. Figure of speech Periphrasis. App-6 . Father's. App-98 and App-112 .
Mark 13:30 — Verily. See note on Matthew 5:18 . this generation . See note on Matthew 11:16 . be done = may have taken place. See note on Matthew 24:34 ; where the Greek particle, an , with the Subjunctive Mood, marks it as being conditional on the repentance of the nation (Acts 3:18-26 ).
