Esther 7:5 — answered and said. Note the idiom = threatened and said. See note on Deuteronomy 1:41 . WHO IS HE, AND WHERE IS HE . . . ? This is the fifth Acrostic, which gives (not Jehovah but) the Divine Name "I AM" of Exodus 3:14 . See App-60 . HE. Note the emphatic repetition of this pronoun.

Job 19:25 — know. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , to include all the effects of knowing. Redeemer = next of kin. Hebrew. go'el. See notes on Exodus 6:6 , and compare Ruth 2:20 ; Ruth 4:1 , Ruth 4:3 , Ruth 4:6 . Isaiah 59:20 . earth = dust of [the earth].

Proverbs 19:25 — scorner = scoffer. will beware = will be made wise (note the force of the Hiphil). Illustrations: Israel (Exodus 14:31 ); the stubborn (Deuteronomy 21:21 ); Gibeonites (Joshua 9:3 ); Sergius Paulus (Acts 13:6-12 ). reprove = set right. and he will understand knowledge = will cause teaching to be discerned. Compare Proverbs 22:17 .

Isaiah 1:10 — rulers of: i.e. rulers who ruled as in Sodom. the law. Reference to whole Pentateuch. Twelve times in Isaiah (Isaiah 1:10 ; Isaiah 2:3 ; Isaiah 5:24 ; Isaiah 8:16 , Isaiah 8:20 ; Isaiah 24:5 ; Isaiah 30:9 , &c. people of: i.e. people who acted as the people in Gomorrah acted.

Isaiah 2:2 — in the last days: i.e. the days of Messiah. mountain of the LORD'S house. Psalms 24:3 . Compare Psalms 68:15 . See note on Ezekiel 28:16 . the LORD'S = Jehovah's. App-4 . all nations. Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Genus) = many from all nations. flow = stream. Same word as in Jeremiah 31:12 .

Isaiah 59:2 — iniquities. Hebrew. 'avah. App-44 . Same word as in verses: Isaiah 59:3 , Isaiah 59:12 . Not the same as in verses: Isaiah 59:6 , Isaiah 59:7 . God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 . sins. Hebrew. chata'. App-44 . have hid His face. Compare Isaiah 45:15 ; Isaiah 54:8 ; Isaiah 57:17 .

Isaiah 7:3 — Shear-jashub = the remnant shall return. highway. Occurs in the "former" portion, here, Isaiah 11:16 ; Isaiah 19:23 ; Isaiah 33:8 ; Isaiah 35:8 ; Isaiah 36:2 ; and in the latter portion, Isaiah 40:3 ; Isaiah 49:11 ; Isaiah 57:14 (verb); Isaiah 59:7 (paths); Isaiah 62:10 (verb and noun).

Jeremiah 1:3 — It came also in the days. See note on Genesis 14:1 . the fifth month. The month that Jerusalem was destroyed (Jeremiah 52:12 ; 2 Kings 25:3 , 2 Kings 25:8 ). After that, Jeremiah continued in the Land (Jeremiah 40:1 ; Jeremiah 42:7 ); and, later, in Egypt (chs Jer 43:44 ).

Jeremiah 30:2 — the LORD God of Israel. See note on Jeremiah 11:3 . God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 . in a book. For abiding comfort and hope in the coming times of trouble. Written before the deportation. Compare Jeremiah 30:5-11 , Jeremiah 30:12-24 . A dark foreground is shown in Jeremiah 31:37 .

Jeremiah 31:27 — the house of Israel. See note on Jeremiah 2:4 . the house of Judah. See note on Jeremiah 3:18 . Here we have the union of the two houses. Israel is always named first, for this was the name of the whole nation, which Judah was not. man. Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 .

Ezekiel 24:17 — bind, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 10:6 ; Leviticus 13:45 ; Leviticus 21:10 ). cover not thy lips. Compare Micah 3:7 . the bread of men : i.e. the bread or food brought to the house of mourners. Compare Jeremiah 16:5-7 . Hosea 9:4 , men. Hebrew, plural of 'enosh . App-14 .

Ezekiel 47:3 — man . Hebrew 'ash. App-14 . the line = a measuring line, Hebrew. kav . Only here in Ezekiel. Not the same word as in Ezekiel 40:3 , which is pathil . cubits. See App-51 , (1). the waters , &c. = waters [reaching] to the ankle, No Art. Hebrew "of the ankles". Genitive of Relation. App-17 .

Hosea 13:5 — I did know thee, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 2:7 ; Deuteronomy 8:15 ; Deuteronomy 32:10 ). Compare Amos 3:2 . The Septuagint reads "I shepherded, or was shepherd to thee", reading re ithika instead of yeda tika : i.e. (Resh = R) for (Daleth = D). the land of great drought. Compare Deuteronomy 8:15 .

Hosea 2:19 — I will betroth, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 22:16 . Deuteronomy 20:7 ; Deuteronomy 22:23 , Deuteronomy 22:25 , Deuteronomy 22:27 , Deuteronomy 22:28 ; Deuteronomy 28:30 ). App-92 . Elsewhere only in 2 Samuel 3:14 ("espouse"). Notice the thrice-repeated word here, and in verses: Hosea 2:19 , Hosea 2:20 .

Mark 1:17 — Come. This call explains Acts 1:21 , Acts 1:22 . The official mission comes liter, in Mark 3:17 , &c. to become fishers of men. The likeness is not conveyed by the Figure of speech Simile, or stated by Metaphor, but is implied by the Figure of speech Hypocatastasis. See App-6 .

Mark 4:37 — storm = squall. The earlier storm in Matthew was caused by an earthquake (Greek. seismos) . That storm was before the calling of the Twelve (Matthew 8:24 and Mark 10:1 ). This storm was subsequent (Compare Mark 3:13 ). beat = were beating Thecefoer an open boat. fullfilling. In the earlier storm it was gettingcovered.
