Psalms 132:8
Arise. Figure of speech Ellipsis ( App-6 ) = [and will say] "Arise, O LORD". &c. This is what Solomon did say in 2 Chronicles 6:41 , see Psalms 68:1 (and note there), according to Numbers 10:35 .Psalms 132:8-10; Psalms 132:8-10 record what David said.
the ark of Thy strength. Occurs only here and 2 Chronicles 6:41 . See notes on Exodus 25:22 and 1 Chronicles 13:3 .
Psalms 22:3
But Thou. And yet Thou. Compare Psalms 22:9 and Psalms 22:19 . Note the emphasis.
holy. See note on Exodus 3:6 . Here = the Divine attribute.
inhabitest the praises. "Praises" put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6 , for the Sanctuary, where the praises were offered. The various readings and renderings arise from trying to make sense, not seeing this figure of speech. Compare Psalms 80:1 ; Psalms 99:1 .
Psalms 76:3
There. Emphatic. Hebrew. sham . Compare Genesis 2:8 . Exodus 40:3 (therein). Deuteronomy 1:39 (thither). 2 Chronicles 6:11 (in it).
brake He = hath He broken in pieces.
battle. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), for other weapons used in battle.
Selah. Connecting the Jebusite defeat with God Who gave it; and passing on from the third person to the second. See App-66 . Note the emphasis on "Thou".
Psalms 84:1
Title. A Psalm. Hebrew. mismor. See App-65 .
for the sons of Korah = of, &c. The seventh of nine so ascribed. See note on Psalms 42:0 , and App-63 .
How . . . ! Figure of speech. Ecphdnlsis. App-6 .
amiable = beloved.
tabernacles = habitations. Hebrew. mishkan ( App-40 ). Perhaps referring to the Mosaic (at Gibeon), and the Davidic (on Zion).
LORD of hosts. Hebrew. Jehovah Sabaioth. App-4 . See note on 1 Samuel 1:3 .
Psalms 84:9
shield: i.e. God's provision in Messiah. He is our Shield (Genesis 15:1 ). Faith's shield (Ephesians 6:16 ). This shield includes: (1) Favour (Psalms 5:12 ); (2) Salvation (Psalms 18:35 ); (3) Truth (Psalms 91:4 ). And "Favour" includes Life (Psalms 30:5 ); Mercy (Isaiah 60:10 ); Preservation (Psalms 86:2 ); Security (Psalms 41:11 ); Remembrance and Salvation (Psalms 106:4 ). Compare Psalms 115:9-11 .
Thine Anointed = Thy Messiah. Not on us.
Proverbs 16:33
lot = stone. See next note.
lap = bosom (Proverbs 17:23 ; Proverbs 21:14 ). The reference is to the bag of the ephod, in which were the two stones by which Jehovah gave true judgment or decision. See notes on Exodus 28:30 . Numbers 26:55 . Illustrations: Haman (Esther 3:7 ); Jonah (Jonah 1:7 ); apostles (Acts 1:15-20 ).
the whole disposing = its every decision.
disposing = judgment. Hebrew. mishpat, as in Numbers 27:21 .
Ecclesiastes 1:2
Vanity of vanities. Figure of speech Polyptoton. Note also the Figure of speech Epanadiplosis ( App-6 ), by which Ecclesiastes 1:2 begins and ends with the same word. These Figures are used for the greatest emphasis, and denote utter vanity.
all = the whole, or "the sum total". Not everything in the universe, but all the human labours of Ecclesiastes 1:3 , Ecclesiastes 1:8 .
vanity. Heb habal, used of that which soon vanishes.
Isaiah 22:24
the offspring and the issue: i.e. direct and collateral issue, and embraces his entire kindred.
the offspring. Hebrew. hazze'eza'im. Occurs only in Job and Isaiah (Job 5:25 ; Job 21:8 ; Job 27:14 ; Job 31:8 , and Isaiah 34:1 ; Isaiah 42:5 ; Isaiah 44:3 ; Isaiah 48:19 ; Isaiah 61:9 ; Isaiah 65:23 ). See App-79 .
vessels. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 , for the kindred mentioned above.
Isaiah 24:4
mourneth. See note on Isaiah 3:26 .
mourneth and fadeth away. languish. Hebrew. umlelah nablah tebel umlalu .
the earth, &c. Figure of speech Prosopopoeia . This is one of the three places where (in the Hebrew) one verse ends with "the earth" and the next verse begins with "the earth", being the Figure of speech Anadiplosis . The other two passages are Genesis 1:1 , Genesis 1:2 , and Hosea 2:23 , Hos 2:24 .
Isaiah 36:3
Eliakim. See and Compare Isaiah 22:20-25 . The promise of Isaiah 22:20 , Isaiah 22:21 was already fulfilled.
house. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), for household. Eliakim fulfils Shebna's office, as foretold in Isa 22:15-26 .
Shebna. See Isaiah 22:15 .
scribe: or, secretary. Title used of a state officer, first in 2 Samuel 8:17 . Connected with finance (2 Kings 22:3 ). Jeremiah 52:25 .
Isaiah 49:6
light = small.
I will also give, &c. Quoted in Luke 2:32 .Acts 13:47; Acts 13:47
Gentiles = nations. Hebrew. goyim. Compare Isaiah 42:6 . Therefore not the secret (or Mystery) of the Epistle to the Ephesians. Compare Genesis 12:3 .Luke 2:29-32 .
Thou. This cannot be Israel, for it is expressly fulfilled in Christ.
Salvation. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), App-6 , for the Saviour Who wrought salvation.
Isaiah 59:4
calleth for justice = sueth in righteousness.
for truth = in truth.
trust = confide. Hebrew. b a t a h . App-69 .
vanity = confusion. Hebrew. tohu, as in Genesis 1:2 ("without form"). See note on Isaiah 24:10 .
lies = vanity.
iniquity. Hebrew. 'aven. App-44 . Same word as in verses: Isa 59:59 , Isaiah 59:6 , Isaiah 59:7 . Not the same as in verses: Isaiah 59:2 , Isaiah 59:3 , Isaiah 59:12 .
Jeremiah 26:1
Jeremiah's Seventeenth Prophecy (see book comments for Jeremiah).
In the beginning: i.e. before the siege, in the third year of Jehoiakim. See note on Jeremiah 27:1 .
The first edition of the Prophets (Naples, 1485-6), the first edition of the entire Hebrew Bible (Soncino 1488), and the second edition (Naples, 1491-3), introduce the word hazi = half, here, to indicate that the second half of Jeremiah commences here.
the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .
Jeremiah 3:24
shame = the shameful thing, "shame" being put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), for the Asherah which put them to shame (Jeremiah 3:25 ). See App-42 .
labour. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for all that had been produced by labour.
their sons. Some codices, with two early printed editions, Aramaean, Septuagint, and Syriac, read "and their", thus completing the Figure of speech Polysyndeton, to emphasize the completeness of the Restoration.
Jeremiah 32:4
his eyes shall behold his eyes: he should go to Babylon (Jeremiah 34:3 ). Yet Ezekiel (Jeremiah 12:13 ) declared that he should not "see" Babylon. Both statements were true; for we read that Zedekiah did "see" the king of Babylon at Riblah, but his eyes being put out there (2 Kings 25:6 , 2 Kings 25:7 ), he never saw Babylon, though he was led there. See Jeremiah 52:10 , Jeremiah 52:11 .
Jeremiah 7:22
I spake not . . . concerning . . . sacrifices. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 15:26 ; Exodus 19:5 ), which was before any law was given. This vindicates the passage from modern criticism. Compare Leviticus 26:3-13 , and 1 Samuel 15:22 , with Psalms 50:8 , Psalms 50:9 ; Psalms 51:16 , Psalms 51:17 ; Isaiah 1:11-17 . Hosea 6:6 . Amos 5:21-24 .Micah 6:6-8 . Matthew 9:13 ; Matthew 12:7 ; Matthew 23:23 .
Ezekiel 22:2
son of man. See note on Ezekiel 2:1 .
judge = pronounce judgment on. See Ezekiel 20:4 ; Ezekiel 23:36 .
bloody city = city of bloods: bloods (plural of Majesty) much blood. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Sebjeet), App-6 , for great bloodshed: referring to those put to death for the truth's sake by the wicked rulers. So in Cr Ezekiel 3:4 , Ezekiel 6:12 , Eze 6:27 .
abominations = idolatries.
Hosea 9:12
Though they bring up, &c Not "inappropriate after Hosea 9:11 ", but is part of the contrast commenced there.
children = sons.
will I bereave them. Ref to Pentateuch (Leviticus 26:22 .Deuteronomy 28:41 , Deuteronomy 28:62 ).
when I depart from them = when I take command from them. Hebrew. sur, as in Hosea 8:4 , and Hosea 12:3 (see notes there). Not the same word as "withdraw" in Hosea 5:6 , which is halaz.
Amos 5:27
beyond Damascus. In Acts 7:43 beyond Babylon, which was of course "beyond Damascus", and included it, showing what was in the Divine purpose in the words of Jehovah (Amos 5:27 ) by Amos. Moreover, the road to Assyria lay through Damascus. Compare 2 Kings 15:29 ; 2 Kings 16:9 . Isaiah 8:4 .Isaiah 3:12 . May not the Holy Spirit quote and adapt His own words as He pleases?
saith = hath said.
Amos 6:14
I will raise up, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 28:49 ). they shall afflict you. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 3:9 ; Deuteronomy 26:7 ).
from . . . unto : i.e. through the length and breadth of the land.
Hemath. Same as Hamath (Amos 6:2 ), in the north. the river. Hebrew nahal = torrent, or wady.
the wilderness. Hebrew ha ' arabah = the 'Arabah: i.e. the plain, south of Judah. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 1:1 , &c.)
