Job 39:4 — with corn = in the open field. Hebrew. bar. A Homonym with three meanings: (1) pure, clear, clean (Job 11:4 .Song of Solomon 6:9 , Song of Solomon 6:10 . Psalms 19:8 ; Psalms 24:4 ; Psalms 73:1 , &c); hence corn winnowed and cleansed (Genesis 41:35 , Genesis 41:49 . Psalms 65:13 .Proverbs 11:26 . Joel 2:24 , &c); (2) the ground, or open field (Job 39:4 ), because bare and clean. Compare Proverbs 14:4 ; (3) ton: see note on Psalms 2:12 .
Psalms 146:4 — His breath, &c. This verse occurs in the Apocrypha (1 Mace. Psa 2:63 ); but why is it assumed that this verse is taken from the Book of Maccabees, instead of this verse in Maccabees being taken from this Psalm? breath = spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . Not the same word as in Psalms 150:6 . returneth. See Genesis 2:7 ; Genesis 3:19 , and compare Ecclesiastes 12:7 . Ecc 104:29 . earth = ground, or dust. Hebrew. 'adamah. Not ' erez = the Earth. thoughts = purposes, or plans.
Psalms 68:17 — Sinai into the Sanctuary". See Ginsburg, Int., pp 161, 162. Or, the printed text may stand with the Ellipsis supplied thus: "Jehovah among them (i.e. the angels and chariots) [hath come from] Sinai into the Sanctuary". holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 .
Psalms 80:3 — Turn us again. Figure of speech Cycloides ( App-6 ) governing the Structure. Compare verses: Psalms 80:7 , Psalms 80:19 . Not from captivity, but from idolatry to the true worship. God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 . Note the significant order: Psalms 80:3 , "O God"; Psalms 80:7 , "O God of hosts"; Psalms 80:19 , "0 Jehovah, God of hosts". This Divine order rebukes our own loose use of the Divine titles; and shows us the importance of noting their Divine use, not heeding modern hypotheses.
Proverbs 10:8 — will receive, &c. Illustrations: Abraham (Genesis 22:0 , Hebrews 11:8 , Hebrews 11:17 ); David (2 Samuel 7:0 ); widow (1 Kings 17:10-16 ); Rechabites (Jeremiah 35:6-10 . Compare Proverbs 23:22 ). a prating fool = a fool (Hebrew. 'evil. See note on Proverbs 1:7 ) of lips: lips put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for what is spoken by them. Illustrations: Korah, &c. (Numbers 16:0 ); Diotrephes (3 John 1:9-10 ). Compare 2 Peter 2:10 . Jude 1:13 .
Proverbs 3:32 — froward = those who turn aside. The same word as in Proverbs 2:15 ; not as elsewhere in Proverbs. abomination to the LORD. Note all the things thus declared: Proverbs 3:32 (Proverbs 11:20 ); Proverbs 6:16 ; Proverbs 8:7 ; Proverbs 11:1 ; Proverbs 12:22 ; Proverbs 15:8 (Proverbs 21:27 ), 9, 16, 26; Proverbs 16:5 ; Proverbs 17:15 , Proverbs 17:15 ; Proverbs 20:10 (23); Proverbs 28:9 . secret = secret counsel. What is sealed up from all save those to whom He reveals it.
Ecclesiastes 12:11 — The words of the wise. See notes on p. 864, and App-7 . nails. These were built into a wall, because Eastern walls were too hard or too soft for them to be hammered in. fastened = planted. Masculine, while "nails" is feminine: but the Accent unite the two words. The verb nata' is found again only in Ecclesiastes 3:2 , where it is singular. by the masters = [are] the lords, or rulers. ba'al. one shepherd. The Inspirer. See Genesis 48:15 ; Genesis 49:24 .Psalms 23:1 .
Ecclesiastes 3:4 — to weep. Genesis 23:2 ; Gen 44:30 . 2 Samuel 12:21 .Joel 2:17 . Jeremiah 21:9 . Luke 6:25 . to laugh (Compare Ecclesiastes 2:1 , Ecclesiastes 2:2 ). Genesis 21:6 . Psalms 2:4 ; Psalms 37:13 .Matthew 5:4 ; Matthew 9:15 .Luke 6:21 .Nehemiah 8:9 . to mourn. Song of Solomon 2:3 — the apple tree. Occurs only six times in Scripture: four times in this book (Song of Solomon 2:3 , Song of Solomon 2:5 ; Song of Solomon 7:8 ; Song of Solomon 8:5 ); once in Proverbs ( Son 25:11 ); and once in Joel (Song of Solomon 1:12 ); three times for the tree, and three times for the fruit. Probably the orange tree. the trees of the wood: i.e. the wild trees. my beloved. Masculine. Showing that it is the Shulamite speaking. his = its.
Isaiah 23:3 — 7:18 . "River" is here put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), for the country (Egypt) through which it passes. she is a mart of nations: or, it became merchandise for the nations. mart = gain resulting from merchandise, as in Isaiah 23:18 (Isaiah 45:14 .Proverbs 3:14 ; Proverbs 31:18 ).
Isaiah 49:7 — Redeemer = Kinsman Redeemer. Hebrew. go'el . See note on Isaiah 41:14 and Exodus 6:6 . Whom man despiseth = Whom their (i.e. Israel's) soul (Hebrew. nephesh. App-13 ) despiseth. Compare Isaiah 53:3 .Psalms 42:5 , Psalms 42:6 . Matthew 26:67 . 1 Corinthians 2:14 . nation. Hebrew. goi : i.e. a heathen nation. So called here for its unbelief and rejection of the Messiah. a servant of rulers. Compare Psalms 2:2 .Matthew 27:41 . the Holy One of Israel. See note on Isaiah 1:4 .
Jeremiah 14:12 — I will not, &c. See Jeremiah 7:16 ; Jeremiah 11:14 ; Ezekiel 8:18 . Amos 5:23 .Micah 3:4 . offer = offer up. oblation = a gift offering, or donation. Hebrew. minchah. Jeremiah 51:8 — is suddenly, &c. This must refer to a future fulfilment, for the present condition came gradually, See Isaiah 21:9 ; Isaiah 47:9 , Isaiah 47:11 . Compare Revelation 14:8 ; Revelation 18:8 , Revelation 18:10 , Revelation 18:17 , Revelation 18:19 . destroyed = broken down. Hebrew. shabar. Not the same as in verses: Jeremiah 51:1 , Jeremiah 51:3 , Jeremiah 51:11 , Jer 1:20 , Jer 1:25 , Jer 1:25 , Jer 1:55 . take balm = fetch balSamaritan Pentateuch Compare Jeremiah 8:22 ; Jeremiah 46:11 .
Ezekiel 44:30 — first of all, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 13:2 ; Exodus 22:29 , Exodus 22:30 ; Exodus 23:19 . Numbers 3:13 ; Numbers 18:12 , Numbers 18:13 ). oblation = heave offering. Hebrew. terumah . See note on Exodus 29:27 . The word is often repeated here. Daniel 11:30 — Chittim = Cyprus, or some European power. See note on Numbers 24:24 . Reference to Pentateuch (Numbers 24:24 ). App-92 . against the holy covenant . Made with the Jews at the beginning of the last seven years, already mentioned in Daniel 9:27 . in Daniel 11:28 , he had already plotted the breaking of it. do = do [so], or accomplish [it]: i.e. he will break it. holy . Daniel 8:22 — for it = in the place thereof. four kingdoms . These are said to have been: (1) Ptolemy's (Egypt, Palestine, and some parts of Asia Minor); (2) Cassander's (Macedonia and Greece); (3) Lysimachus's (Bithynia, Thrace, Mysia, &c.); (4) Seleucus's (Syria, Armenia, and territory east of the Euphrates). But the continuity of Alexander's dominion ceased with him, and will not be seen again till "the little horn" arises. the nation .
Zechariah 5:4 — I will bring = I have brought. saith the LORD of hosts = [is] the oracle of Jehovah of hosts. See note on 1 Samuel 1:3 . enter into = lodge, or abide in. My name . Emphatic for "Me Myself". See note on Psalms 20:1 . remain = lodge, or roost. shall consume it = shall destroy it, or bring it to an end. Hebrew. kadah. Not the same word as in Zec 5:14 , Zec 5:12 . Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 13:45 ). App-92 . timber = timbers (plural)
Malachi 4:2 — fear = revere. See the Structure "Y" and "Y", p. 1300. Sun . Here the word "Sun" is feminine, as in Genesis 15:17 . Jeremiah 15:9 . Nahum 3:17 , &c.; and is connected with "rightousness" (which is also feminine), which Messiah, the righteous One, alone can bring. of. In this case "of "would be the Genitive of Apposition. See App-17 . wings = beams, or rays. ye. The 1611 edition of the Authorized Version omits this "ye". grow up = leap for joy, or frisk. as = like.
Mark 13:11 — when = whenever. lead = may be leading. take no thought = be not full of care beforehand. See note on Matthew 6:25 . no . Greek. me. App-105 . in. Greek. en . App-104 .
