Isaiah 15:1 — burden. The first of the seven burdens. Because = Surely. Moab. Had been subdued by Saul (1 Samuel 14:47 ) and David (2 Samuel 8:2 ); and paid tribute to Ahab ( 2Ki 1:1 ; 2 Kings 3:4 , 2 Kings 3:5 ). Ar = Rabbah (Numbers 21:28 ; Deuteronomy 2:9 , Deuteronomy 2:18 , Deuteronomy 2:29 ). brought to silence = cut off or destroyed.

Isaiah 39:1 — At that time: i.e. shortly after the two miracles of the shadow and Hezekiah's recovery from his sickness. Compare 2 Chronicles 32:31 . letters and a present. These were more potent than Sennacherib's hosts; just as Ahab's daughter and feast were than his men of war with Jehoshaphat. See 2 Chronicles 18:1-3 . Compare with 2 Chronicles 17:1-3 .

Jeremiah 33:2 — the Maker thereof = the doer thereof: i.e. the accomplisher of His word. the LORD. This is not found in some codices, nor in the Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate. the LORD is His name. The Massorah states that this expression occurs only four times (Exodus 15:3 .Exodus 33:2 .Amos 5:8 ; Amos 9:6 ). Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 15:3 ). App-92 .

Ezekiel 18:3 — saith the Lord GOD = [is] Adonai Jehovah's oracle. the Lord God . See note on Ezekiel 2:4 . any more . This refers to a future time, which has not yet come (Jeremiah 31:29 , Jeremiah 31:30 ). Till then it is otherwise (Ezekiel 21:3 .Lamentations 5:2; Lamentations 5:2 ), and has been since Genesis 3:0 . Compare Romans 5:12-21 .

Ezekiel 42:13 — holy , See note on Exodus 3:5 . holy chambers = the chambers of the holy place, where, &c. Ref, to Pentateuch (Leviticus 6:16 , Leviticus 6:26 , Leviticus 24:9 ). App-92 , the LORD . Joel 2:14 — Who knoweth . . . ? That this refers to Jehovah is clear from Jonah 3:9 . return turn away from (His fierce anger], as in Jonah 3:9 , whore it is ascribed to "God". Same word as in Joel 2:12 . a blessing : i.e. a new harvest. Compare Isaiah 65:8 . meat . . . drink offering , &c. See note on Joel 1:9 , Joel 1:13 .

Joel 2:3 — A fire, &c. Compare Joel 1:19 , Joel 1:20 . them. The northern army (Joel 2:11 ) symbolized by the locusts of Joel 1:4 . the garden of Eden. Nahum 2:5 — He. The king of Assyria (Nahum 3:18 ). recount = bethink himself of. worthies = nobles, who may assemble their troops; as in Nahum 3:18 . Jdg 5:13 . 2 Chronicles 23:20 . in their walk = as they march. the wall thereof = her wall: i.e. the wall of Nineveh. and = yet. the defence = the mantelet, or portable storming cover [of the besiegers].

Matthew 4:24 — fame = hearing. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of the Adjunct), App-6 , for what was heard. throughout = unto. Greek. eis. diseases. Greek. nosos, translated sickness in Matthew 4:23 . devils = demons. Compare Matthew 12:26 , Matthew 12:27 . Mark 3:22 , Mark 3:26 . were lunatick. Greek. seleniazomai. Occurs only here, and Matthew 17:15 . From selene = the moon.

Mark 15:15 — willing = determining. Greek. boulomai. See App-102 .2. to content the people = to satisfy the crowd. This is the motto of the present day, but it always ends in judgment. See and compare Exodus 32:1 with Exodus 26:27 . Acts 12:3 with Acts 12:23 ; 2 Timothy 4:3 with 2 Timothy 4:1 and 2 Timothy 4:8 . So here.

Mark 7:22 — covetousness = covetous desires. Wickedness = wickednesses. App-128 . deceit = guile. lasciviousness = licentiousness. evil . App-128 . evil eye . Figure of speech Catachresis. App-6 . Luke 17:10 — So likewise ye = Thus ye also. shall = may. say, We = say that (Greek. hoti) we. unprofitable = not needed, no use for. This may be for various reasons. Occurs only here and in Matthew 25:30 , where the reason maybe for having done wickedly. Not the same word as in 2 Timothy 3:9; 2 Timothy 3:9 . Philemon 1:11 , Hebrews 13:17 .

Luke 24:26 — Ought not , &c. . . . ? Behoved it not? not. Greek. ouchi. App-105 . Christ = the Messiah. App-98 . and to enter , &c. This, in God's counsels, was to follow immediately on the sufferings, had the nation repented. See Acts 3:18-26 , and compare 1 Peter 1:11 ; 1Pe 4:13 ; 1 Peter 5:1 . Doubtless this was the subject of Acts 1:3 .
