Matthew 13:24-43 something pretty funny. 2 weeks ago when I shared about the parable of the Soil, I made an emphatic statement, some called this the parable of the Seed, some the parable of the Sower but I liked best the parable of the soil...because it’s about the 4 diff soils of the heart.
It was brought to my attention by my friend Mike, that he heard me read in the parable itself that Jesus called it the parable of the Sower in 13:18. So in conclusion...I believe Jesus was right...and I was less right
Matthew 5:13 be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Slide4-6 Jesus uses 2 important elements in their day (salt & light) to paint a picture of what it is to be a faithful christian witness. Remember, the Beatitudes are impossible to live out in private, they are powerfully social & outward.

Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus was saying I AM different, thus my people are different & distinct.

Problem in the 2nd verse of the bible/Gen1:2 Darkness. Solution, next verse, Let there be light.
III. Slide10 YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (14a)
You is emphatic. The bible always seems to give us Identity before behavior...You are...
A light bulb that has power running to it doesn’t try to shine...it just shines.

Luke 23:44-56 silver, yet He redeemed the world.
Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd.
Jesus died, yet by His death He destroyed the power of death.

Romans 10:1-21 wanted or how to get it.
Caution on trying to establish your own righteousness – it can happen here at CM!
You could be proud of yourself because you’re a Double-Dipper (you go to church twice a week!)
SOURCE! (4,5)
Righteousness is found in Christ (4)
(4) Christ is the end of the law – in the sense of its aim rather than its termination. (Shepherdʼs Notes; pg.62)
Phillip’s Translation, “For Christ means the end of the
2 Corinthians 1:1-11 it and make it better.” [we laugh but, God will...]
Alan Redpath said, “Personally, I would rather have the spiritual gift of bringing life to one broken heart than the ability to preach a thousand sermons.”
There was actually 4 letters written by Paul to Corinth that we know of:
The 1st we don’t have; the 2nd letter written was our 1st Cor.; the 3rd we don’t have(mentioned 2:4-11, scholars have named it the “severe” letter); & this letter was

Paul obviously received 2 tickets to Paradise. Most of us get 1. He cashed in 1 here.
2 TICKETS TO PARADISE! (1-6)
EXALTATION! (1-4)
(1) Boasting - Necessary for man; not necessary for God.
Man – Often a professor needs to let his students know right up front he knows what he’s talking about. Or during a job interview.
God – vertical boasting is never
2 Corinthians 5:11-21 one’s self, to stand beside one’s self. Inferring mental imbalance. To be crazy.

Festus said of Paul, Paul, you’re beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad! Acts 26:24
Others said of Jesus, He is out of His mind. Mark 3:21
Has it ever been said of you? – Do people think you’re a little weird for being a Christian in our day & age, or for holding to your “archaic puritanical beliefs”?It’s
Hebrews 1:1-3 eve of May 21st 1882 he said, I have nothing to do tonight but to preach Jesus Christ.
I start with the same, I have nothing to do today but to preach Jesus Christ.
Remember a few years ago hearing about what happened in San Diego with 4th of July fireworks? Instead of ending with a grand finale...it started with one. The 18 minute show started 5 min early & lasted only 15 seconds when it accidentally caught fire...living up to its name, The Big Bay Boom!
Here in Hebrews we also
James 2:1-13 Spirit.
Q: Are we free from the preoccupation with what people have rather than what they are? Q: Do we love & learn from the rich in faith?
James made this a tightly constructed passage: 1st, he introduces a principle(1); then he illustrates his point(2-4); next he explains it(5-11); finally, applies it(12,13).
SO SPEAK & SO DO!
FAITH & FAVORITISM! (1)
Clearly, faith in Christ & partiality are incompatible!
Partiality/favoritism/respect of persons defined: It literally means to “receive

And an armor bearer w/a full-sized shield to ward off any arrows.
Israel’s response? Dismayed & greatly afraid.
DAVID, A GENUINE GIANT! (12-58)
40 DAYS OF PURPOSE! (12-27)
Enter David...the real giant of the story!
Just as the Spirit-filled David came to rescue the Spirit-emptied Saul in ch.16, so we now see the faith-filled David coming to save the cowering faith-less Saul in 17:12. (Charles

A position symbolic of an inferior “waiting on” & “ready to serve” a superior. (Cyril Barber; The books of Samuel; pg.72)

They hurry the next morn to check it. But Dagon was again found prostrate before the ark, & this time severely damaged.

2 Samuel 19:16-39 judgment from the Lord.”
This time he told him no because, “it was a day of rejoicing, not a day of vengeance.”
Lets jump ahead to the end of Shemei’s & his story. When David was on his deathbed.
1 Kings 2:36-46 - When Solomon took over, he restricted him to Jerusalem so he could be watched. Shimei overstepped his bounds, was arrested/executed.
Shimei had a weakness for resisting authority & treating God’s appointed ministers with disdain, &
2 Samuel 8:1-18 greater temptation when everything goes well for us than when everything goes wrong.
Success is much more brutal to the depraved mind than failure!
David will show us, “How to Handle Success”!

THE PHILISTINES! (1)
David captures their largest city. Metheg Ammah = Gath (lit. The Bridle of the Mother City)
