Genesis 1:5
‘DAY AND NIGHT’
‘God called the light day, and the darkness He called night.’
Genesis 1:5
(I.) One of the first lessons which God intends us to learn from the night is a larger respect for wholesome renovation. Perhaps this may not show itself in any great lengthening of our bodily life, but rather in a more healthy spirit, less exposed
Genesis 27:34 expected to regain it easily. He thought to regain God’s blessing, not by fasting and prayer, but by savoury meat, by feasting and making merry.
I. Esau’s cry is the cry of one who has rejected God, and who in turn has been rejected by Him. He was: (1) profane, and (2) presumptuous. He was profane in selling his birthright, presumptuous in claiming the blessing. Such as Esau was, such are too many Christians now. They neglect religion in their best days; they give up their birthright in exchange
Genesis 43:30-31
TENDERNESS AND SELF-CONTROL
‘He entered into his chamber, and wept there. And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself.’
Genesis 43:30-31
The text exhibits the contrast between the secret life and the outward life of each one of us; between the chamber and the banqueting-room; between the man whom God sees and the man whom the world sees, in each one of us. It is to the thought of secret
Job 2:11
JOB’S TWO FOES AND THREE FRIENDS
‘Satan … his wife … Job’s three friends.’
Job 2:7; Job 2:9; Job 2:11
The outward calamities from which Job first suffered are narrated in chapter 1. Affliction, affecting Job’s property and even family, failed to destroy his religious integrity.
Then Satan says that the test has not been a complete and a sufficient
Job 2:7
JOB’S TWO FOES AND THREE FRIENDS
‘Satan … his wife … Job’s three friends.’
Job 2:7; Job 2:9; Job 2:11
The outward calamities from which Job first suffered are narrated in chapter 1. Affliction, affecting Job’s property and even family, failed to destroy his religious integrity.
Then Satan says that the test has not been a complete and a sufficient
Job 2:9
JOB’S TWO FOES AND THREE FRIENDS
‘Satan … his wife … Job’s three friends.’
Job 2:7; Job 2:9; Job 2:11
The outward calamities from which Job first suffered are narrated in chapter 1. Affliction, affecting Job’s property and even family, failed to destroy his religious integrity.
Then Satan says that the test has not been a complete and a sufficient
Psalms 46:1
GOD A STRONG REFUGE
‘God is our refuge and strength.’
Psalms 46:1
The Psalmist who wrote these words knew the happiness of their meaning, for the life into which God does not enter cannot be, in the deepest sense, happy.
I. Our refuge.
( a) From isolation and human misunderstanding.—Probably the experience of some
Psalms 98:1
THE NEW SONG
‘O sing unto the Lord a new song.’
Psalms 98:1
The psalm divides itself with great naturalness into three equal parts of three equal verses each. The whole is an expression of praise, and the different parts deal with the theme of praise, the mode of praise, and the spirit of praise.
I. The theme
Jeremiah 21:1
MAN PURPOSES, GOD DISPOSES
‘The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord.’
Jeremiah 21:1
I. The King’s anxious question.—It was the last extremity of the siege when Zedekiah sent this message to Jeremiah. His people and he had postponed their compliance with the warnings and invitations of God’s love till the last possible hour, and
Daniel 5:1 FIESTA DE BELSHAZZAR
"Una gran fiesta".
Daniel 5:1
I. El asiento del escarnecedor.
Hosea 10:13
‘FRUIT WHICH IS DEADLY’
‘Ye have eaten the fruit of lies.’
Hosea 10:13
The faithless, divided heart of man produced its natural fruit. In this chapter we find that Israel as a sinful nation is (I) described, (II) appealed to, (III) punished.
I. The picture of sinful Israel.—Three characteristics are specially emphasised:—
(1)
Hosea 7:8 and untempered, a character that lacks unity, that is spoiled by defect and damaged by excess, an inconsistent whole upon which, whichever way you view it, the result is marred.
I. The grounds of this impeachment.—Note a few of the more important.
(1) The first we see in the eighth verse taken as a whole: Ephraim has missed the grand practical design of religion, which is entire separation unto God.
There are many unturned cakes to-day from the same cause—many persons who seek, like Ephraim, to
Joel 1:1 EL PROFETA JOEL
"La palabra del Señor que vino a Joel".
Joel 1:1
Hay este valor en el estudio de Joel: que toca casi todo el ciclo del año cristiano, o lo que es lo mismo, de la experiencia cristiana. Joel es el profeta del gran arrepentimiento, del don pentecostal y del conflicto final de los grandes principios.

Amos 6:1
‘AT EASE IN ZION’
‘Woe to them that are at ease in Zion.’
Amos 6:1
I. There is a great difference between being at ease and being contented.—Every Christian should learn contentment even in pain and suffering. St. Paul said that he had learned in whatsoever state he was therein to be content. Peace, too, is not only
—Debe distinguirse
1 Corinthians 8:1-13 EL REGALO MÁS EXCELENTE
"El conocimiento envanece, pero la caridad edifica".
1 Corintios 8:1
I.
1 Samuel 20:42
THE BEST OF FRIENDS MUST PART
‘And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, the Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever,’ etc.
1 Samuel 20:42
This was the last meeting and the final leaving of two young men whose friendship has been a proverb for nearly thirty centuries.
I. There are partings in every life.—The ties of yesterday are loosened to-day, and will be broken to-morrow.
2 Samuel 1:26
CLOSER THAN A BROTHER.”
‘I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.’
2 Samuel 1:26
Two great qualities were combined in Jonathan, courage and faith. With such qualities, who could be more fit to succeed to the sceptre of Israel? And yet Jonathan waived all claim on behalf of the man whom he loved; he recognised in David qualities
