Genesis 49:1 — Last. Hebrew, "future days." It was an ancient and commendable custom, for parents to assemble their children in their last moments, to give them salutary instructions. They often also foretold to them what should happen. See Deuteronomy xxxi; Josue xxiv; 1 Kings xii; Tobias iv. 3; 1 Machabees ii. Cyrus and Socrates both believed that they had then an insight into futurity. (Calmet)
I. 53. (Calmet) (San Agustín, de C. [¿Ciudad de Dios?] Xvii. 8.) Heb. shoterim, to execute the sentence; (D.) or "officers." --- You. Prot. "with the good." H.
Psalms 111:2 — Earth. Temporal rewards were proposed to the carnal Jews; but the more enlightened knew what was to be most desired. They sought after the riches, mentioned by the apostle, 1 Corinthians i. 5., and 1 Timothy vi. 18. (Calmet) --- The just and their seed shall prosper, (Worthington) at least in the next world. (Haydock)
Psalms 34:18 — Strong, gravi. Hebrew hatsum, numerous, (1 Machabees i. 1.; Menochius) and "weighty," (Haydock) which is the consequence of great numbers, (Berthier) and of virtue. St. Augustine understands the Church, which is not carried away like chaff before the wind. Amama dislike this. (Haydock) --- The resurrection is foretold, (ver. 17.) and here the Catholic Church is signified. (Worthington)
Psalms 49:4 — Earth. As if they were animated, Deuteronomy iv. 26., and xxxii. 1., Isaias i. 2., and Jeremias ii. 12. --- Some understand the angels and apostles by heaven. (Calmet) --- Judge. Literally, "to divide," discernere, (Haydock) the goats from the sheep, Matthew xxv. 32. (Calmet) (Menochius) --- The whole earth, particularly the elect, will approve of God’s decree, 1 Corinthians vi. 2.
Ecclesiastes 8:2 — I. Protestants add, "counsel thee, to keep, &c. "Obey the king and God." Song of Solomon 5:14 — Jacintos. O venas moradas. (Calmet) &mdash Zafiros. Así se adorna su cinturón o prenda. (Sánchez) &mdash- Las obras de Cristo procedían de su infinita caridad para con la humanidad, cuya salvación deseaba mucho, (Marcos vii. 37. y 1 Corintios XV. 22., y 1 Timoteo ii. 4.) de modo que nadie pueden perecer sino por su propia culpa. (Calmet)
Jeremiah 20:1 — Son, or descendant. His father was Melchia, chap. xxi. 1., and 1 Paralipomenon ix. 12. (Calmet) --- Chief: high priest, (Theodoret) or rather a chief officer, (chap. xxix. 25.) or prince, (Matthew xxvi. 27.; Tolet.; Grotius) whose duty it was to take up impostors. He treated Jeremias in this light. (Calmet) --- See Luke xxii. 52. (Haydock)
Daniel 12:8 — Understand not. The prophets were obliged to pray, and sometimes to receive a fresh revelation to explain what they had seen. (Chap. ix. 2.; 1 Peter i. 11.; and 1 Corinthians xiv. 26.) What regarded Antiochus and the Church was almost inexplicable before the event, as the times of antichrist are to us. (ver. 9.)
Daniel 12:8 — No entender. Los profetas estaban obligados a orar y, a veces, a recibir una nueva revelación para explicar lo que habían visto. (Cap. Ix. 2; 1 Pedro i. 11; y 1 Corintios xiv. 26.) Lo que consideraba a Antíoco y la Iglesia era casi inexplicable antes del evento, como lo son los tiempos del anticristo para nosotros. (ver. 9.)
Numbers 16:32 — Tents. Hebrew adds, "all those who belonged to (or sided with) Core, and all their riches." Moses informs us, (chap. xxvi. 10,) how some of Core’s children were miraculously preserved.
