Genesis 10:12 — Resen, perhaps Larissa, here written without the La; as 1 Paralipomenon v. 26. Hala has the preposition, and is written Lahela. (Bochart.) --- This, &c. It is doubtful which of these three cities is meant: but as we know that Ninive was remarkable for size and magnificence, we may suppose this is designated. (Calmet) (Menochius)
Exodus 16:1 — Sin, after they had encamped on the Red Sea, Numbers xxxiii. 10. The 33d station was also in the desert of Sin, or Cades. But that is far remote from this desert, Numbers xx. 1. 1 Kings 18:28 — Blood. Strange infatuation! which has nevertheless prevailed in many pagan mysteries and countries. Thus were Bellona, Cybele, the Syrian goddess, &c., honoured and appeased. H. --- Some think that the kings of Juda had before detained these men. Estius --- Others suppose that Joas had taken many nobles, whom he exchanged for their sons. But this is all conjecture. C.
Nehemiah 2:20 — Answered. Septuagint, "returned them an account (Greek: logon) ....we are his pure servants, and we will build." (Haydock) --- Part, or business, 1 Esdras iv. 4. --- Justice, or right to the city. (Calmet) --- You may mind your own affairs. (Tirinus) --- Remembrance. It was esteemed a high honour to be a citizen of Jerusalem, Psalm lxxxvi. 5.
Psalms 104:16 — And. The psalmist continues to mention the favours of God, till the Israelites entered the promised land, which the author of 1 Paralipomenon xvi., passes over. (Haydock) --- Bread. In time of famine, people are not strengthened with their food. (Eusebius) (Ezechiel iv. 16., and v. 16.) --- God permitted, (Worthington) or caused the famine to rage.
Psalms 136:3 — Sion. The Levites were trained to singing from their infancy, at the expense of the nation. Under David, there were 288 masters, and 8,000 Levites who played on music, 1 Paralipomenon xv. The Babylonians wished to hear them, (Calmet) or (Worthington) spoke insultingly, (Theodoret) as the pagans asked what good Christ had done? (St. Augustine)
Psalms 77:31 — Israel. St. Jerome applies this to those who receive unworthily, particularly if they be priests, 1 Corinthians xi. 29. (Calmet) --- God selected the most guilty (Berthier) having allowed them to feast for a whole month. (Worthington) --- Then he brought down by death, or "hindered," as it were, "by shackles," (Septuagint) the most valiant. (Haydock)
Psalms 83:7 — Tears. Protestants, "Baca." Marginal note, "of mulberry-trees," near Jerusalem, Judges ii. 5., and 1 Kings v. 23. (Haydock) --- It was perhaps used proverbially for any dry place. The Lord had promised to relieve the captives with water, Isaias xxxv. 5., &c. (Calmet) --- Place. The temple or tabernacle, (Haydock) which the Lord hath appointed. (Calmet)
Song of Solomon 3:4 — Me. She was perhaps dead. Women had separate apartments, to which none but the husband could have access, Genesis xxiv. 28. 1 Timothy 3:3 — No dado al vino, ni amante del vino. Esto, dice San Juan Crisóstomo, es menos que ser un borracho; porque los tales están excluidos del reino de los cielos, sean quienes sean.
