Search for "4"
Genesis 17:4 4. my covenant is with thee—Renewed
mention is made of it as the foundation of the communication that
follows. It is the covenant of grace made with all who believe in the
Saviour.
Genesis 19:4 4. men of Sodom, compassed the
house—Appalling proofs are here given of their wickedness. It
is evident that evil communications had corrupted good manners;
otherwise Lot would never have acted as he did.
Job 29:22 22. not again—did not
contradict me.
dropped—affected their
minds, as the genial rain does the soil on which it gently drops
(Amos 7:16; Deuteronomy 32:2;
Song of Solomon 4:11).
Psalms 28:2 2. lift up my hands—a gesture
of prayer (Psalms 63:4; Psalms 141:2).
oracle—place of
speaking (Exodus 25:22;
Numbers 7:89), where God answered His
people (compare Psalms 5:7).
Psalms 33:21 21. his holy name—(Compare
Psalms 5:12; Psalms 22:22;
Psalms 30:4). Our faith measures
mercy (Matthew 9:29); and if of
grace, it is no more of debt (Matthew 9:29- :).
Psalms 37:26 26. his seed is blessed—literally,
"for a blessing" (Genesis 12:2;
Psalms 21:6). This position is still
true as the rule of God's economy (1 Timothy 4:8;
1 Timothy 6:6).
Psalms 49:10 10. For he seeth—that is,
corruption; then follows the illustration.
wise . . . fool—
(Psalms 14:1; Proverbs 1:32;
Proverbs 10:1).
likewise—alike
altogether— (Psalms 4:8) —die—all
meet the same fate.
Psalms 69:4 4. hate me, &c.—(Compare
John 15:25). On the number and
power of his enemies (compare John 15:25- :).
then I restored . . .
away—that is, he suffered wrongfully under the imputation of
robbery.
Psalms 74:8 8. together—at once, all
alike.
synagogues—literally,
"assemblies," for places of assembly, whether such as
schools of the prophets (2 Kings 4:23),
or "synagogues" in the usual sense, there is much doubt.
Psalms 75:4 4-8. Here the writer speaks in
view of God's declaration, warning the wicked.
Lift . . . up the horn—to
exalt power, here, of the wicked himself—that is, to be arrogant or
self-elated.
Psalms 75:7 4-8. Here the writer speaks in
view of God's declaration, warning the wicked.
Lift . . . up the horn—to
exalt power, here, of the wicked himself—that is, to be arrogant or
self-elated.
Psalms 84:4 4. This view is favored by the
language here, which, as in Psalms 15:1;
Psalms 23:6, recognizes the blessing
of membership in God's family by terms denoting a dwelling in His
house.
Psalms 86:1 1, 2. poor and needy—a
suffering child of God, as in Psalms 10:12;
Psalms 10:17; Psalms 18:27.
I am holy—or, "godly,"
as in Psalms 4:3; Psalms 85:8.
Isaiah 24:2 2. as with the people, so with the
priest—All alike shall share the same calamity: no favored
class shall escape (compare Ezekiel 7:12;
Ezekiel 7:13; Hosea 4:9;
Revelation 6:15).
Isaiah 24:4 4. world—the kingdom of
Israel; as in Isaiah 13:11,
Babylon.
haughty—literally, "the
height" of the people: abstract for concrete, that is, the high
people; even the nobles share the general distress.
Isaiah 39:4 4. All—a frank confession of
his whole fault; the king submits his conduct to the scrutiny
of a subject, because that subject was accredited by God. Contrast
Asa (2 Chronicles 16:7-10).
Isaiah 48:4 4. obstinate—Hebrew,
"hard" (Deuteronomy 9:27;
Ezekiel 3:7, Margin).
iron sinew—inflexible
(Acts 7:51).
brow brass—shameless as
a harlot (see Jeremiah 6:28; Jeremiah 3:3;
Ezekiel 3:7, Margin).
Isaiah 54:7 7. small moment—as compared
with Israel's coming long prosperity (Isaiah 26:20;
Isaiah 60:10). So the spiritual
Israel (Psalms 30:5; 2 Corinthians 4:17).
gather thee—to Myself
from thy dispersions.
Philippians 3:4 4. "Although I (emphatical)
might have confidence even in the flesh." Literally, "I
having," but not using, "confidence in the flesh."
I more—have more
"whereof I might have confidence in the flesh."
2 Samuel 4:4 4. Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son
that was lame of his feet—This is mentioned as a reason why,
according to Oriental notions, he was considered unfit for exercising
the duties of sovereignty.
