1 Chronicles 1:23 4-23. Noah, Shem, Ham, and
Japheth—The three sons of this patriarch are enumerated, partly
because they were the founders of the new world, and partly because
the fulfilment of Noah's prophecy ( :-) could not otherwise appear to have been verified.
Ezra 3:4 4, 6. They kept also the feast of
tabernacles . . . From the first day of the seventh month—They
revived at that time the daily oblation, and it was on the fifteenth
day of that month the feast of tabernacles was held.
Ezra 3:6 4, 6. They kept also the feast of
tabernacles . . . From the first day of the seventh month—They
revived at that time the daily oblation, and it was on the fifteenth
day of that month the feast of tabernacles was held.
Job 38:4 4. To understand the cause of
things, man should have been present at their origin. The finite
creature cannot fathom the infinite wisdom of the Creator (Job 28:12;
Job 15:7; Job 15:8).
hast—"knowest."
understanding— (Job 15:8- :).
Job 41:2 2. hook—rather, "a rope
of rushes."
thorn—rather, a "ring"
or "hook." So wild beasts were led about when caught
(Isaiah 37:29; Ezekiel 29:4);
fishes also were secured thus and thrown into the water to keep them
alive.
Job 42:4 4. When I said, "Hear,"
&c., Job's demand ( :-) convicted him of being "without knowledge." God
alone could speak thus to Job, not Job to God: therefore he quotes
again God's words as the groundwork of retracting his own foolish
words.
Psalms 1:6 6. knoweth the way—attends to
and provides for them (Psalms 101:6;
Proverbs 12:10; Hosea 13:5).
way of the wicked—All
their plans will end in disappointment and ruin (Psalms 37:13;
Psalms 146:8; Proverbs 4:19).
Psalms 120:4 4. Sharp arrows of the
mighty—destructive inflictions.
coals of juniper—which
retain heat long. This verse may be read as a description of the
wicked, but better as their punishment, in reply to the question of
Psalms 120:3.
Psalms 143:3 3, 4. The exciting reason for
his prayer—his afflictions—led to confession as just made: he now
makes the complaint.
as those that have been long
dead—deprived of life's comforts (compare Psalms 40:15;
Psalms 88:3-6).
Psalms 65:4 4. dwell in thy courts; . . .
[and] satisfied with the goodness . . . temple—denote
communion with God (Psalms 15:1;
Psalms 23:6; compare Psalms 23:6- :). This is a blessing for all God's people, as denoted by the
change of number.
Psalms 66:16 16-20. With these he unites his
public thanks, inviting those who fear God (Psalms 60:4;
Psalms 61:5, His true worshippers)
to hear. He vindicates his sincerity, inasmuch as God would not hear
hypocrites, but had heard him.
Psalms 66:19 16-20. With these he unites his
public thanks, inviting those who fear God (Psalms 60:4;
Psalms 61:5, His true worshippers)
to hear. He vindicates his sincerity, inasmuch as God would not hear
hypocrites, but had heard him.
Psalms 8:3 3, 4. The allusion to the
magnificence of the visible heavens is introduced for the purpose of
illustrating God's condescension, who, though the mighty Creator of
these glorious worlds of light, makes man the object of regard and
recipient of favor.
Proverbs 19:18 18. (Compare Proverbs 13:24;
Proverbs 23:13).
let not . . .
spare—literally, "do not lift up thy soul" (Psalms 24:4;
Psalms 25:1), that is, do not desire
to his death; a caution to passionate parents against angry
chastisement.
Ecclesiastes 10:18 18. building—literally, "the
joining of the rafters," namely, the kingdom (Ecclesiastes 10:16;
Isaiah 3:6; Amos 9:11).
hands— (Ecclesiastes 4:5;
Proverbs 6:10).
droppeth—By neglecting
to repair the roof in time, the rain gets through.
Isaiah 20:4 4. buttocks uncovered—BELZONI
says that captives are found represented thus on Egyptian monuments
(Isaiah 47:2; Isaiah 47:3;
Nahum 3:5; Nahum 3:8;
Nahum 3:9), where as here, Egypt
and Ethiopia are mentioned as in alliance.
Isaiah 22:4 4. Look . . . from me—Deep
grief seeks to be alone; while others feast joyously, Isaiah mourns
in prospect of the disaster coming on Jerusalem (Micah 1:8;
Micah 1:9).
daughter, c.—(see on
Isaiah 1:8 Isaiah 1:8- :).
Isaiah 25:8 8. Quoted in :-, in support of the resurrection.
swallow up . . . in
victory—completely and permanently "abolish" (2 Timothy 1:10;
Revelation 20:14; Revelation 21:4;
compare Genesis 2:17; Genesis 3:22).
rebuke—(Compare Mark 8:38;
Hebrews 11:26).
Jeremiah 25:23 23. Dedan—north of Arabia
(Genesis 25:3; Genesis 25:4).
Tema . . . Buz—neighboring
tribes north of Arabia (Job 32:2).
all . . . in . . . utmost
corners—rather, "having the hair cut in angles," a
heathenish custom (see on Job 32:2- :).
Jeremiah 5:4 4. poor—rather, "the
poor." He supposes for the moment that this utter depravity is
confined to the uninstructed poor, and that he would find a different
state of things in the higher ranks: but there he finds unbridled
profligacy.
