Genesis 15:14 — And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. Afterward shall they come out, … — All the saints’ abasements are but in order to their advancement. As God brought forth his Israel with jewels, and other wealth; so the "afflicted" Church, and "tossed with tempest," shall build her walls and "lay her foundations with sapphires and agates". Leviticus 6:4 — Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, And is guilty. — Found guilty by a self-condemning conscience; which now, like Samson’s wife, conceals not the riddle, but tells all; as she said of our Saviour in John 4:29 .

Revelation 16:5 — And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. The angel of the waters — The same that poured forth his vial upon the waters, Revelation 16:4 . Thou art righteous — God’s judgments are sometimes secret, always just, and so to be acknowledged. We shall one day see the reason of all, and say as Jehu did, 2 Kings 9:36 .

Revelation 2:19 — I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. The last to be more — This is not every man’s happiness. See Trapp on " Revelation 2:4 " It is a disputable question (saith one) whether any Christian (except he die soon after his conversion) do go on from strength without some sensible decay of the inward power of that grace wherewith he is endued.
