Genesis 19:12 — And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring [them] out of this place: Hast thou here any, … — It is something for safety, to be Lot’s kinsman. So the Kenites in Saul’s time, receive life from Jethro’s dust, many ages after his death, and favour from his hospitality. 1 Samuel 15:6

Genesis 24:49 — And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. That I may turn to the right hand, …, — i.e., Seek somewhere else: for something I must do, in answer to my trust. "It is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful". 1 Corinthians 4:2

Genesis 30:29 — And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me. Thou knowest how I have served thee, — sc ., With all my might, and to thy singular advantage: if therefore I stay longer, reason requireth that there should be some respect had to my benefit also, since he that "provideth not for his own is worse than an infidel". 1 Timothy 5:8

Genesis 8:2 — The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; And the rain from heaven was restrained. — These four keys, say the Rabbis, God keeps under his own belt: 1. Of the womb; 2. Of the grave; 3. Of the rain; 4. Of the heart. "He openeth, and no man shutteth; he shutteth and no man openeth". Revelation 3:7

Exodus 10:12 — And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, [even] all that the hail hath left. Even all that the hail hath left. — How easily can God straiten, yea, starve us all, if he but send forth his foraging armies! Joel 1:6

Exodus 20:25 — And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. Thou hast polluted. — Not polished it. So in preaching. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 Epistolae ornamentum est ornamentis carere: Plainness commends an epistle. Politian. Nimio mundo studentes, ab immundo propius absunt. Colerus. Some mar all by over doing it.

Exodus 21:33 — And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; And an ox or an ass. — We can hardly open the deep pit of God’s bottomless, boundless mercy, but some silly beast will be falling thereinto; "stumbling at the word, being disobedient, whereunto also they were appointed." 1 Peter 2:8

Exodus 31:18 — And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. Written with the finger of God. — Of the Decalogue, above all other Holy Writ, God seems to say, as Paul, Philemon 1:19 "Behold, I have written it with mine own hand"; i.e., By mine own power and operation.

Exodus 4:5 — That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. That they may believe. — Miracles are sufficient testimonies of an extraordinary calling from God, provided that they be true miracles (not such as Deuteronomy 13:1-3 ), to confirm a calling that is agreeable to God’s holy word, as here.

Leviticus 1:3 — If his offering [be] a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. Burnt sacrifice. — A whole burnt offering, Hebrews 10:6 purporting whole Christ suffering for us, Isaiah 53:12 and our sacrificing our whole selves to him as a "reasonable service." Romans 12:1

Leviticus 10:11 — And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses. And that ye may teach. — The priest’s lips should both preserve knowledge and present it to the people; even all the counsel of God. Malachi 2:7 Acts 20:27 "To give the knowledge of salvation by the remission of sins." Luke 1:77

Leviticus 21:7 — They shall not take a wife [that is] a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he [is] holy unto his God. They shall not take a wife. — Lest their function be disgraced. That which Hosea was commanded to do against this prohibition Hosea 1:2 was but visional. Or profane. — Deflowered, ravished. Put away from her husband. — Because of evil report.

Leviticus 4:27 — And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth [somewhat against] any of the commandments of the LORD [concerning things] which ought not to be done, and be guilty; And if any soul sin. — As there is none that liveth and sinneth not. 1 Kings 8:46 Triste mortalitatis privilegium est licere aliquando peccare. Ephor. Augusta nimis res est, et nulli mortalium concessa nuspiam errare. - Amama.

Leviticus 9:6 — And Moses said, This [is] the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you. And the glory of the Lord shall appear unto you. — So shall it one day to us: yea, we shall be like him, and appear with him in glory; and must therefore purify ourselves, as God is pure. 1 John 3:2-3

1 Timothy 3:11 — Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Must their wives be grave — As themselves must, 1 Timothy 3:6 . Gravity is such an elixir, as by contaction (if there be any disposition of goodness in the same metal) it will render it of the property. So that deacons’ wives cannot be otherwise than grave and gracious, having such husbands as is above described.

1 Timothy 4:5 — For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. By the word — Of permission, Acts 10:15 , and of promise, a new right purchased by Christ, … And prayer — For his leave and blessing, that "staff of bread," … This is to eat to the Lord Romans 14:6 ; to imitate Christ, Matthew 26:26-30 ; Paul,Acts 27:35; Acts 27:35 ; Samuel, 1 Samuel 9:13 .

1 Timothy 5:12 — Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. Having damnation — Or public reproach, as 1 Timothy 5:14 , for their desultory lightness and inconsiderate rashness. Cast off their first faith — Not that of their baptism (as various of the Indians do that have been baptized by the Spaniards), but their vidual Of or belonging to, befitting, a widow or widowhood; widowed. ŒD promised chastity and service to the saints.

Hebrews 13:13 — Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. Bearing his reproach — The reproach of saints is the reproach of Christ, and their sufferings his, Colossians 1:24 ; Nehemiah 4:3-5 . God is more provoked than Nehemiah. He that saith, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," repays ofttimes, when we have forgiven, when we have forgotten; and calls to reckoning after our discharges.

Jude 1:21 — Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Keep yourselves — Remit nothing of your former fervour. But keep afoot and alive that twofold love of God: 1. That of desire, and earnest delight and intense longing after him, as our chiefest good. 2. Of delight and complacency, whereby we hug and embrace him, solacing ourselves in the fruition of him.

Revelation 17:14 — These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. The Lamb shall overcome them — 1. With a spiritual victory, by a sweet: subjection, at least by a conviction of their consciences. 2. With an external victory, as the Imperialists in Germany, the Papists here.
