Psalms 118:5 — I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, [and set me] in a large place. I called upon the Lord in distress — Heb. out of distress, q.d. I celebrate not God’s mercy of course, but out of experience. The Lord answered me — Heb. Yah answered me with a large roomth. See Psalms 4:2 .

Psalms 31:16 — Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake. Make thy face to shine, … — Which by reason of the clouds of affliction clustering about me, I cannot for present perceive. Psalms 59:8 — But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision. But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them — q.d. Thou not only hearest, but jeerest, at their madness, and wilt bring all their purposes to nought with little ado; and, as it were, playing and sporting. See Psalms 2:4 .

Psalms 80:12 — Why hast thou [then] broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her? Why hast thou then broken down her hedges? — i.e. Taken away thy mighty hand hitherto held over her. This befell not till they degenerated into a strange vine, Jeremiah 2:21 , and brought forth wild grapes, Isaiah 5:4 .

Christ’s garden in the Canticles, as it hath a wall, Song of Solomon 4:15 so a well to water it, and make it fruitful.

Jeremiah 35:10 — But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. But we have dwelt in tents. — And fed much upon dairy produce, as did Heber the Kenite, who was one of them, Judges 4:19 living in abstinence and bodily labour, that we might be free to divine contemplations.

Jeremiah 51:7 — Babylon [hath been] a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. Babylon hath been a golden cup. — See Jeremiah 25:15 Revelation 17:4 . In the Lord’s hand, — i.e., Oeconomia et dispensatione eius: He had the mixing and distributing of it.

Ezekiel 22:15 — And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. I will scatter thee. — Deuteronomy 4:27 ; Deuteronomy 28:25 ; Deuteronomy 28:64 . And will consume thy filthiness. — By thy captivity and misery I will refine and reform thee Heb., Faciam ut integretur. Zechariah 13:9

Luke 16:6 — And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Take thy bill — The scope of this parable is, ut profusionem charitate erga pauperes compensemus, saith Beza, that we expiate, as it were, our prodigality, by showing mercy to the poor, Daniel 4:27 .

Luke 24:19 — And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: Which was a prophet — Yea, and more than a prophet. But the disciples were wondrously ignorant, till the Spirit came down upon them, Acts 2:1-4 .

Luke 7:22 — Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. John 6:2 — And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
