Como eco da mensagem do Salmo 14, aqui Davi proclama a necedad do ateísmo (veja-se também Romanos 3:10). A gente pode dizer que não há Deus para cobrir seus pecados, ter uma desculpa para continuar pecando, e/ou para passar por cima ao Juiz e evitar o julgamento. Um "néscio" não é alguém falto de inteligência. Muitos ateus e incrédulos som extremamente cultos. Os néscios são os que rechaçam a Deus, o único que pode salvá-los.
