On festal occasions banners are often carried in choir processionals "to signify yet more clearly the progress and future triumph of the Church, according to that description of her in the Song of Solomon: 'Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?'"
