Holman Bible Dictionary
Garland translates in modern translations two Hebrew and one Greek term, all referring to wreaths worn on the head. Garlands symbolized instruction or the benefit of wisdom (Proverbs 1:9
; Proverbs 4:9
). In Isaiah 61:3
garlands form part of the bridegroom's wedding apparel. Israel's days of Exile, pictured as mourning, would give way to the celebration of God's salvation, pictured as a wedding. At Acts 14:13
the priest of Zeus brought Paul and Barnabas garlands. In Greek mythology the gods were frequently portrayed wearing garlands. Mistaking the apostles for Zeus and Hermes, the priest deemed garlands a suitable gift.
