(ihssh' tahb) Personal name meaning, “man of good” or “man of Tob.” KJV follows early translations in interpreting this as a proper name (2Samuel 10:6,2 Samuel 10:8 ). The standard Hebrew manuscript apparently has two words, indicating a common noun phrase. Thus most modern translations read “men from Tob.” A manuscript from the Dead Sea Scrolls has Ishtob as one word and thus as a proper name; but modern Bible students still generally follow the standard manuscript rather than the older Dead Sea Scroll. “Man of Tob” could also refer to the ruler of Tob. See Tob .
