(jee i' ehl) Personal name possibly meaning, “God is strong” or “God heals.” The early Hebrew scribes often used Hebrew vowel points in the text to indicate the name should be read as Jeiel where the written text indicated Jeuel (1 Chronicles 9:35; 1 Chronicles 11:44; 2 Chronicles 26:11; 2 Chronicles 29:13 ). The early translations point to similar early confusion at 1 Chronicles 9:5 . This article will deal with both Jeiel and Jeuel, since all occurrences of Jeuel show early textual evidence of being read Jeiel. 1. Leader in the tribe of Reuben (1 Chronicles 5:7 ). 2 . One of early members of tribe of Judah to return from Babylonian Exile (1 Chronicles 9:6 ). 3 . Leader of the tribe of Benjamin as they settled in Gibeon. He may have married a foreign woman (1 Chronicles 9:35; compare 1 Chronicles 8:29 ). See 1 Chronicles 11:44 ). 5 . A Levite and porter or gatekeeper under David (1 Chronicles 15:18 ). 6 . A Levite and harp player under David (1 Chronicles 15:21 ). 7 . A Levite who served as worship leader at the ark of the covenant under David (1 Chronicles 16:5 ). The Hebrew text includes two Jeiels in this verse, and interpreters since the earliest translations have changed one or the other to a slightly different spelling. 8. Ancestor of Levite who prophesied under Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:14 ). 9 . Royal scribe or secretary under King Uzziah (792-740 B.C.). He maintained the numbers of military personnel (2 Chronicles 26:11 ). 10 . Levite who helped Hezekiah purify the Temple (2 Chronicles 29:13 ). 11 . Officer among the Levites who provided them offerings to sacrifice at the Passover under Josiah about 622 B.C. (2 Chronicles 35:9 ). 12 . Man who went with Ezra from Babylon to Judah about 458 B.C. (Ezra 8:13 ). 13 . Man condemned for having foreign wife and thus tempting Israel to worship foreign gods under Ezra (Ezra 10:43 ).
