(neh' gal) Name, perhaps a form of “Ne-uru-gal” (Lord of the great city), of the Mesopotamian god of the underworld whose cult was centered in the ancient city of Cuth (Cuthah, modern tell Ibrahim). Following the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, the Assyrians resettled Samaria with Mesopotamian peoples who brought their gods, including Nergal, with them (2 Kings 17:30 ). The name is also an element in the name of the Babylonian official Nergal-sharezar (Jeremiah 39:3 ,Jeremiah 39:3,39:13 ). See Assyria.
