A narrow depression between Jerusalem's Ophel (Hill of David) and the western or upper hill of the city. It was much deeper in ancient times but has been filled up with debris through the centuries, especially since the destruction of the city by the Romans in A.D. 70. When David captured the city, the valley served as one of the natural defensive barriers. During Hellenistic times it was included within the city walls. During Herod's building campaign, he constructed bridges across the valley to connect the palace area with the Temple complex.
