Dung was used both for fuel and manure. It may have been carried out of the city by one particular gate, and this would attach the name to the gate. The one now so called in Jerusalem may have no reference to the above, which may not now exist. Nehemiah 2:13; Nehemiah 3:14; Nehemiah 12:31 .
