Reigned from November 24, 496 to November 19, 498. He caused the name of Acacius, Patriarch of Constantinople, to be removed from the tablets of the Church, although recognizing the validity of his sacramental acts. Condemned Traducianism. Worked for the conversion of King Clovis of the Franks, and of all his people. Treated schismastics so gently that he was accused of heresy. Dante portrayed him in Hell in The Divine Comedy.
